When historians look back at Jon Bernthal’s career, 2026 will undoubtedly be looked at as one of his benchmark years. Bernthal’s year began on the small screen starring in shows like His & Hers (co-starring Tessa Thompson) and The Bear (co-starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and he also headlined his first solo MCU Frank Castle project, The Punisher: One Last Kill. Bernthal parlayed this success in The Punisher Disney Plus special, into a role in one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, co-starring Tom Holland. Two weeks before Brand New Day, Bernthal and Holland also starred in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is nearing the end of its theatrical run with over a $1.5 billion cumulative total. Not all of Bernthal’s movies have been massive successes at the box office, though.

Back in 2021, around the time that it looked like Jon Bernthal’s future as The Punisher was over, he teamed up with Taylor Sheridan for one of the most underrated movies of his career. We’re talking, of course, about Those Who Wish Me Dead, the neo-Western thriller co-starring Angelina Jolie that grossed only $19 million at the box office during its entire run. Those Who Wish Me Dead had bounced around on various streaming platforms in the years since its release, but in the last few months, it settled into a home streaming on Netflix, the biggest platform in the world. Those Who Wish Me Dead may have lost some steam since its Netflix premiere earlier in the summer, where it was in the top 10 in dozens of countries, but the film is still a force to be reckoned with on watchlists.

What Is ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’ About?

Not only did Taylor Sheridan write the script for Those Who Wish Me Dead with Charles Leavitt and Michael Koryta, he also directed the film, which is becoming increasingly rare for him in this later stage of his career. Nicholas Hoult, who recently featured opposite David Corenswet in Superman (2025), also has a key role in Those Who Wish Me Dead. The official synopsis for the film, which earned scores of 63% from critics but 86% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows: “Oscar winner Angelina Jolie stars as Hannah, a smoke jumper still reeling from the loss of three lives she failed to save from a fire when she comes across a traumatized 12-year-old boy with nowhere else to turn.” The film is perfect for fans of Yellowstone and Man on Fire.
