Warning! Spoilers for From the DC Vault: Death in the Family - Robin Lives! #4!It's true: after the Joker's death, Batman officially gives up the cape and cowl. It's hard to imagine any possible reason for Bruce Wayne giving up the mantle of Batman, but DC just revealed one of the only things that could cause Bruce to walk away from the role he dedicated his life to.
The surprising situation that causes Bruce to give up being Batman is revealed in From the DC Vault: Death in the Family: Robin Lives #4 by J.M. DeMatteis, Rick Leonardi, Rico Renzi, and Taylor Esposito. This story follows an alternate Gotham history, exploring what would happen if Jason Todd wasn't killed by the Joker in the original Death in the Family by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo. Jason still ends up horribly traumatized, which eventually culminates in him murdering the Joker.
This horrific moment is what finally pushes Bruce to give up being Batman. Seeing the trauma that Jason goes through and how far it pushed him, Bruce decides that he could do more good for Jason and Gotham as Bruce Wayne than as Batman. Giving up the mantle, he moves to the heart of Gotham City and fully devotes himself to using his wealth to fix Gotham - as well as making sure Jason gets the help he needs.
After the Joker's Brutal Death, Bruce Wayne Ditches Batman to Use His Wealth More Directly for Gotham
Bruce Wayne Becomes the Light that Gotham Needs
Bruce Wayne has always tried to use his money to support charity and heal Gotham City as best he can, but he's never been able to fully devote himself to that, as the majority of his time is taken up by being Batman. Bruce truly believed that he did more good as Batman than as Bruce, but after seeing Jason's experiences first hand and how he was suffering, he decided that being Batman wasn't helping the most important people to him. It's one of the few times that quitting Batman would actually help the people around him.

Bruce felt that he could finally step away and try to use his wealth more directly to heal the city of Gotham without the Joker terrorizing the world. When the Joker is a constant threat who could kill hundreds every time he shows up, it's much harder for Bruce to step away from the role, especially considering the weird relationship between the two. But with the Clown Prince finally gone, Bruce saw his opportunity to change how he approached saving Gotham.
It's Hard to Imagine a Batman Who Isn't Bruce Wayne
But Bruce Finally Found the Chance to Step Down
Batman has always been a symbol of hope for Gotham City, but he couldn't ever be more than a symbol. Batman wasn't a man that the citizens of Gotham could be directly inspired by. That's one of the major benefits of being Bruce Wayne. He's someone that everyone can point to as a shining example to live up to. Bruce did some of his best work to save Gotham City in the shadows, but with the Joker gone and Jason in desperate need of help, Bruce Wayne finally saw the way he could step down as Batman and still save both his city and the people most important to him.
