Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE: JOBY) advanced after confirming a binding commercial agreement with Virgin Atlantic for UK air taxi services. The stock closed at $7.66, gaining 2.54% during the regular session. Moreover, shares climbed to $7.96 in pre-market trading, adding another 4.05% as the partnership expanded Joby’s commercial plans.
Joby and Virgin Atlantic formalize long-term UK air taxi agreement
Joby Aviation signed a definitive multi-year agreement with Virgin Atlantic during the Farnborough International Airshow. Consequently, the agreement converts the companies’ 2025 partnership announcement into a binding commercial framework. Virgin Atlantic will become Joby’s exclusive airline partner for air taxi services across the United Kingdom.
The partnership expands Joby’s existing relationship with Delta Air Lines. Delta owns a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic and already works with Joby in the United States. Therefore, the three companies will support connected air travel between airports and nearby cities in both markets.
Virgin Atlantic will integrate Joby’s air taxi service into its digital booking platforms. Customers will book electric air taxi connections alongside long-haul flights through the airline’s website and mobile application. Meanwhile, Joby will continue managing aircraft operations, route planning, and regulatory approvals in the United Kingdom.
Partnership supports UK expansion and commercial launch plans
Joby plans to launch services from Virgin Atlantic’s major hubs in London and Manchester. Manchester will serve as the primary gateway for northern England connections. Additionally, the company expects to expand services to more cities after the initial launch.
The proposed network includes a Manchester Airport to Leeds route lasting about 15 minutes. Another planned route connects Heathrow Airport with Central London in around eight minutes. These travel times remain significantly shorter than comparable road journeys.
Virgin Atlantic will support customer acquisition and infrastructure integration at both airport hubs. However, Joby will remain responsible for operating the aircraft and meeting UK Civil Aviation Authority requirements. The company also continues aircraft certification under the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement between the Federal Aviation Administration and the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
Aircraft development advances alongside commercial partnerships
Joby strengthened public awareness by displaying a full-scale aircraft model at Potters Fields Park in London earlier this month. Visitors explored the aircraft near Tower Bridge and viewed its passenger cabin. The exhibition highlighted the company’s plans for future urban air mobility services.
The electric aircraft features six tilting propellers that enable vertical takeoff and landing. Furthermore, the design produces substantially less noise than conventional helicopters during operation. The aircraft also supports routes of up to 100 miles with rapid turnaround capability.
Joby has completed thousands of test flights while expanding flight demonstrations in major cities. Recent demonstrations included point-to-point flights between JFK Airport and Manhattan, alongside operations in San Francisco. Therefore, the Virgin Atlantic agreement strengthens Joby’s commercial strategy as the company advances certification and prepares for future UK operations.
