Carrey is a legend in Hollywood known for his comedic and acting skills. He is the king of hyper-energetic physical comedy, the ability to transform not only his persona but his face, as well as being able to go from an eccentric, funny character to a heartbreaking and raw person on screen. Known for his roles in The Mask, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Truman Show, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the actor has certainly established himself as one of the greats.
Unfortunately, on August 31, a Carrey cult classic that was incredibly divisive is officially leaving its streaming home. Me, Myself & Irene will no longer be available to stream on Tubi when August ends. It's unclear where the comedy will end up, but the movie is leaving Tubi behind. However, not everyone will be upset over the removal of the 2000 comedy, as it caused quite a controversy when it was first released, including protests and more.
Me, Myself & Irene was directed by the Farrelly brothers (Bobby and Peter) and starred Carrey alongside Renée Zellweger, Anthony Anderson, Mongo Brownlee, Jerod Mixon, Chris Cooper, Michael Bowman, Richard Jenkins, Robert Forster, and Mike Cerrone. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) protested the movie amid its promotional campaign, stating that it promoted harmful stereotypes towards mental illness.
Advocates came forward and criticized the portrayal of Carrey's character and his dual personalities, which were shown as violent, erratic, and dangerous. The split-faced movie posters also faced heavy backlash and the protagonist's advanced schizophrenia was allegedly worsening the public's perception of real psychiatric disorders. The insensitivity towards mental health led a lot of people to critique the movie, while others defended Me, Myself & Irene as a comedy to not be taken seriously.
On Rotten Tomatoes, critics rated Me, Myself & Irene 47% and stated, "Carrey goes all out and almost manages to carry the whole thing by himself, but this is one of the Farrelly brothers' most weak, flat and disappointing scripts so far," as well as stating "Carrey plus a split personality equals a lot of nifty physical comedy that nobody else in the world would be able to pull off." The reviews reaffirm everyone's love of Carrey who is credited for carrying the entire film on his back.
At the time of writing, it's unclear where the divisive comedy will end up, but for now, Me, Myself & Irene is available to stream on Tubi until August 31.
