Jesy Nelson Shares What Led to Her Twins’ Spinal Muscular Atrophy Diagnosis

Jesy Nelson is giving a shoutout to her ex.

Weeks after the Little Mix alum shared that her and Zion Foster’s 8-month-old daughters Ocean Jade and Story Monroe were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA), she opened up about the couple’s amicable decision to break up.

“We have been through such a traumatic experience and for us, our girls are our main priority and our main focus,” Jesy told Daily Mail in an interview published Feb. 2. “We want to give them the most positive, happy and uplifting time and energy and because we have both been through such a traumatic experience, the energy wasn't right between us, which is understandable.”

The 34-year-old continued, “We are still friends and we are still united in co-parenting our daughters, they are our main focus, that's all we can do, be the best possible parents we can right now.'”

The split comes four months after the pair announced their engagement.

Jesy—who began dating Zion, 27, in 2022—shared a photo to Instagram Sept. 26 of the two embracing each other on a beach during sunset as the “Mine” rapper placed a tender kiss on her cheek. In the sweet snap, the mom of two smiled at the camera while showing off her new bling on that finger.

Amid her babies’ ongoing health battle, the X Factor season eight winner is focused on putting one foot in front of the other.

“I am taking each day as it comes because I feel like right now, especially with the girls' diagnosis, it's all I can really do,” she explained to the outlet. “If I try to look too far into the future, I will drive myself crazy.”

Offering an update on her little ones—who she shared were diagnosed with a genetic disorder that causes severe muscle weakness—Jesy noted that they’re doing as well as they can.

She added, “The girls are doing really well and they're happy, that's all I can really ask for.”

Though she previously shared insight into how the muscle disease will affect her kids, she’s hopeful that they’ll lead amazing lives.

“We’ve been told that they will probably never walk, they probably will never regain their neck strength and they’re going to be in wheelchairs,” she said during her Jan. 6 appearance on UK's This Morning. “But there’s been so many stories where parents have been told this and then their children have gone on to do incredible things. I believe we’ve got to manifest that into existence.”

Though the pair hadn’t confirmed their marriage after getting engaged in September 2025, the Bloody Valentine star's husband filed for divorce on Jan. 22, according to documents obtained by multiple outlets. That same day, Jaime revealed that she was "blindsided" by the investor's decision to abruptly end their marriage.

“I was completely blindsided by the divorce filing, which came out of nowhere,” the actress told Page Six in a statement published Jan. 22. “I was with Austin the night before it became public, and while like many marriages we had normal challenges, I genuinely believed we were working on our relationship.”

Jaime—who shares kids James and Leo with ex Kyle Newman—further shut down any suggestion of infidelity as a cause for the breakup, adding, “Any recent interactions being referenced publicly were strictly professional business meetings and have no connection to this private matter.”

The pair continued, “It feels ironic to ask for privacy during this time since we've always tried to be open and honest about our relationship, but your kindness and respect will go a long way as we try to navigate our next chapter.”
