Jensen Ackles Officially Joins New ‘Tracker’ Replacement Crime Thriller

While he’s best known for his role as Dean Winchester in Supernatural, Jensen Ackles’ name has been heating up in the last few years, and he’s not slowing down anytime soon. Ackles stole the show in the third season of The Boys on Prime Video thanks to his commanding performance as Soldier Boy, and after taking most of Season 4 off, he returned in a recurring role in Season 5. Prime Video also has bigger plans for Ackles, who has been tapped to star in the second Boys spin-off show, Vought Rising, which will premiere sometime in 2027. The first Boys spin-off series, Gen V, was canceled after two seasons, but only time will tell if Vought Rising will also suffer the same fate.

Even if Vought Rising isn’t given the chance to continue beyond a season or two, Ackles has another show he can fall back on. We’re talking, of course, about Tracker, the CBS procedural led by Justin Hartley. Tracker Season 4 is set to officially premiere soon and Ackles has already confirmed he will return as Russell Shaw in the new season, but he’s also eyeing a role in a Tracker replacement show coming to a different streaming platform. News broke this morning that Jensen Ackles has been tapped to star in Rules of Prey, a new crime thriller series coming soon to MGM+. The show is based on the first novel in John Sandford's Rules of Prey book series. Additional cast members for the show are being kept under wraps right now, but they will likely be announced as the show reaches a more advanced stage of development.

What Is ‘Rules of Prey’ About?

An official description for Rules of Prey reads as follows:

“Rules of Prey follows Lucas Davenport (Ackles), formerly a detective in the Minneapolis Police Department, drawn out of seclusion back into law enforcement to investigate a series of confounding murders designed to send a message specifically to him. When an ingenious serial killer begins murdering Minneapolis citizens, Davenport, a brilliant polymath and unconventional investigator, takes the case, sparking an intense psychological duel with an equally intelligent adversary. While the show sounds like it will be the perfect replacement series for Tracker, it is also angling to be a must-watch for Bosch fans. In addition to starring in Rules of Prey, Ackles is also set to executive produce the series, meaning he will be involved in select creative decisions.
