He joined Collider as a News Author in April 2024, was promoted to a Senior position in December 2024, and has written over 3,000 articles for the site, including exclusives relating to Avengers: Doomsday, The Penguin, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, and more. He primarily writes about the latest box office numbers and the hottest movies and TV shows on streaming, while also covering superhero and sci-fi news. Jason Statham’s new movie is woefully underperforming at the box office right now, which isn’t exactly something the action star is used to. Just two years ago, he starred in The Beekeeper, the acclaimed action epic that grossed over $160 million at the box office against a modest $40 million budget. Shelter currently stands at only $27 million at the box office, approaching its third weekend in theaters, but the film needs $100 million to break even due to its $50 million budget. Still, Statham has plenty of movies on streaming that are helping to redeem his latest box office misfire.

It’s been a few years since Statham visited the sci-fi genre, but one of his biggest hits came back in 2023 with Meg 2: The Trench. The film is a direct sequel to the 2018 sci-fi film that co-stars Cliff Curtis (Avatar: Fire and Ash), and despite wildly poor critical reviews, both movies grossed a fortune at the box office. The sequel follows a research team, led by former operative Jonas Taylor (Statham), who venture into the deep for a simple recon mission that’s turned upside down by rival mining forces. Ben Wheatley directed Meg 2: The Trench with a script from Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber.

At the time of writing, Meg 2: The Trench has several streaming homes in America, including both Prime Video and HBO Max. The film is also streaming on HBO Max globally, where it’s in the top 10 in more than 15 countries around the world. The film is as close as Statham has come to remaking Predator, and though the concept of a large prehistoric shark may be more realistic than a killer alien, there are still some stark similarities between the two films.

Jason Statham Has Another Action Movie Coming This Year

Jason Statham may have failed with Shelter, despite the film earning the best reviews for one of his movies in 10 years, but he’ll have a chance at redemption this summer. Statham will star opposite Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) in Mutiny, which will be released this August after being delayed out of its January release spot. He’ll also reprise his role as Adam Clay in a sequel to The Beekeeper, which is confirmed to premiere in January 2027.

Check out Meg 2: The Trench on HBO Max or Prime Video in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
