Jason Statham's New Action Thriller Is Reacher Meets Under Siege

Jason Statham is one of the last remaining old-school movie stars. These days, the intellectual properties are the stars. Audiences don’t flock to a Thor movie to see Chris Hemsworth; they’re going to see Thor. But Statham is one of the few actors left who can actually attract crowds to movie theaters with nothing more than their name. Other actors need the brand recognition of a Marvel superhero or a nostalgic ‘80s classic to help them get butts in seats, but “Jason Statham” on a marquee — just like “Tom Cruise” or “Leonardo DiCaprio” — still means something.

Statham is our modern-day Charles Bronson; an action hero who seems like he’s not just acting, and could genuinely beat up a room full of people. Audiences around the world get to live out their revenge fantasies through Statham’s rollicking on-screen exploits, and he’s not slowing down any time soon. He’s working on a sequel to The Beekeeper, he’s playing himself in an action comedy called Jason Statham Stole My Bike, and he’s starring in frequent collaborator Guy Ritchie’s next crime thriller, Viva La Madness, an unofficial sequel to Layer Cake.

But before all that, he’s got another revenge thriller coming to theaters. On August 21, Lionsgate will release Mutiny, starring Statham as a one-man army who boards a cargo ship to avenge his boss’ death and clear his own name when he’s framed for murder. It sounds like Reacher meets Under Siege (in other words, a perfect vehicle for Statham).

Mutiny's Setting Is Its Biggest Difference To Jason Statham's Other Action Thrillers

If you’ve seen one Jason Statham movie, you’ve pretty much seen them all. His last three movies — Shelter, A Working Man, and The Beekeeper — all have the exact same plot: Statham plays an ex-special forces badass who gave up his life of violence years ago, and when someone he cares about gets into trouble (his friend’s niece, his boss’ daughter, his elderly neighbor, etc.), he reluctantly resumes his life of violence to exact revenge. It’s a very familiar formula, but it works for a reason, and Statham is perfect for that gruff protector role.

Each movie makes one little tweak to that formula. The Meg is a typical Statham action movie, except it’s got a giant prehistoric shark. Wrath of Man is a typical Statham action movie, but it has a neat twist and a clever nonlinear narrative. Mutiny’s setting on the high seas is the main thing that differentiates it from Stath’s other action films, and it’s enough to add another layer of excitement, because being stuck in the middle of the ocean raises the stakes.

Mutiny Is Basically A Reacher Season On The Water

Based on the premise and the tone, Mutiny is looking like a season of Reacher set at sea. Reacher is a revenge thriller, just like Mutiny, and in every season of Reacher, the titular ex-military cop uncovers a widespread conspiracy, goes after the people responsible, and makes a female ally during the mission, just like in Mutiny. In Mutiny, Statham will team up with Peaky Blinders’ Annabelle Wallis as he stumbles into a much larger investigation than he was expecting. Aside from the fact that the protagonist’s name is Cole Reed (classic Statham protagonist name), this could easily be a Reacher adventure.

The nautical setting will make Mutiny even more exhilarating than Statham’s last couple of revenge thrillers. The Beekeeper and A Working Man were very action-packed, but they were landlocked. On a boat in the middle of the ocean, no one has anywhere to run. I’m sure that over the course of the film, to paraphrase Watchmen, we’ll learn that Statham isn’t trapped on a boat with a bunch of bad guys; they’re trapped on a boat with him.
