Jason Statham hasn’t exactly had a textbook start to the year after his new action thriller, Shelter, unexpectedly underwhelmed at the box office. This likely won’t be anything more than a minor setback for the Stath, though, who has another action movie set to premiere this August, which should be relatively light on box office competition with the summer winding down. To kick off 2027, he will even reprise his role as Adam Clay in a sequel to The Beekeeper. The film is being directed by Timo Tjahjanto, and it stars Pom Klementieff alongside Adam Copeland. Statham may be viewed in the eyes of most movie fans as a pure action star, but over the years, he has also starred in several sci-fi hits and even some forgotten fantasy flicks.

Eight years ago, Jason Statham teamed up with Rainn Wilson (The Office) and Cliff Curtis (Avatar: Fire and Ash) for The Meg, the sci-fi film following a rescue mission gone wrong thanks to a giant prehistoric shark. Statham reprises his Meg role as Jonas Taylor in a sequel to The Meg, titled Meg 2: The Trench, which premiered in 2023. Wilson did not return for the sequel, but Curtis did. Still, both films were massive hits at the box office, collectively grossing over $900 million at the global box office. The 2023 sequel is currently streaming on both Prime Video and HBO Max in America, but globally, the film is charting in the top 10 in more than 15 countries around the world. Meg 2 earned a poor 27% from critics but a solid 72% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is a perfect mash-up of Jaws and Predator.

Will There Be Another ‘Meg’ Movie?

It’s unlikely that there will ever be another Meg movie. Director Ben Wheatley has admitted that he would return and direct another Meg movie, but Warner Bros. has not shared the same sentiment. This is mildly surprising, considering the box office success of the first two films. Still, Statham has plenty of irons in the fire, so he won’t be missed as much as Jonas Taylor in the future. He’s soon due to begin shooting his next action blockbuster with David Leitch, Jason Statham Stole My Bike. He will play himself in the film.
