Jason Momoa is officially switching gears within the DC Universe after playing fan favorite Aquaman for eight years.

On Monday, the 45-year-old actor took to Instagram to reveal that he has turned the page on playing a superhero and is trying his hand as the villain Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.

Back in 2023, fans speculated that the Hawaiian star could be up for the role. At the time, Momoa said he had not been contacted to play Lobo but gladly accept an invitation to audition.

'Lobo was always my favorite. If they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a f**k yeah,' he told Fandango at the time. 'But I haven’t received that call. So, I don’t want to put any fake news out there.'

Now in a full-circle moment, he reshared the same 2023 quote and simply penned in the caption, 'They called.'

He is slated to act alongside Milly Alcock who is starring as the titular character. Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow will hit theatres on June 26, 2026.

Superman director and DC CEO James Gunn took to the comments section to congratulate the six-foot-four actor for his return to the DC franchise: 'Welcome, my friend.'

Lobo — Spanish for 'Wolf' — first appeared in the Omega Men #3 comic in June 1983. The character was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen.

Per a fan description, Lobo is 'an intergalactic bounty hunter, the last Czarnian. Known for his colorful speech and rapid regeneration, he has been a nuisance more than a threat.'

Monday's announcement signals a major shift for Momoa, who previously headlined the DC Aquaman films.

The Aquaman franchise is considered to be over with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. And Momoa seemingly confirming that the future of further films in the beloved franchise 'is not looking good.'

'I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time,' he told ET in December 2023.

Although he would be open to continue playing the aquatic superhero he thinks, 'Right now, I’m like, "It's not looking too good."'

And the actor also teased that he was interested in continuing to star in the DCU, but in different roles.
