James Gunn’s Next DC Movie, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Arrives in 2027

What is James Gunn doing as a follow-up to Superman? After months of teasing, the DC Studios president revealed that he’s making Man of Tomorrow, featuring Superman and Lex Luthor, which will be in theaters July 9, 2027.

Gunn’s post, embedded below, didn’t offer much else besides the title and release date, but his stars, David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, both posted similar images of Superman and Lex, so, obviously, they’ll both be returning. You can see all those images below, and there’s an interesting connection.

What’s noteworthy about all of those images is that they are all new. Jim Lee drew Gunn’s, Jorge Jimenez drew Corenswet’s, and Mitch Gerads did Hoult’s. They’re all dated this year, so we assume these are representative of what we can expect in the film. Are Superman and Lex Luthor going to team up? What threat could possibly warrant such a thing? Plus, there’s every indication that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will be in this too. All of which suggests it could be cosmic, hence Lex’s need for a suit.

Moreover, a Lex/Superman team-up, if it is that, would almost certainly be setting up the larger story of the DC Universe. To date, there haven’t been any massive, universe-shaking threats that look ahead to the future. (Though, to be fair, we’re only on the third piece of storytelling.) By the time Man of Tomorrow is released, we’ll have a bunch more (Supergirl, Clayface, Lanterns, etc.) too, so it will be very interesting to see how this gets set up and what its implications are moving ahead.

With a summer 2027 release date, Gunn and his team are probably going to start shooting very soon. As it stands, the film will open weeks after Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and Shrek 5 and against A Quiet Place Part III. That summer is already heating up. Oh, and this will still arrive before The Batman Part II.

So, it’s official. James Gunn’s next DC movie is a Superman sequel/spinoff called Man of Tomorrow, and it’ll be here in less than two years. Are you ready?
