The DC Universe is expanding upon the Superman Saga.

David Corenswet made his debut in the DCU's Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" as the Man of Steel in the 2025 blockbuster, as DC Studios has started its new superhero reboot across the big and small screens. While the actor will bring the icon back to the big screen next summer, a spinoff from the original film is currently in the works.

Following Skyler Gisondo's comments to ScreenRant's Liam Crowley on where The People V. Gorilla Grodd takes place in the DCU timeline, James Gunn has cleared up the actor's previous statement. In a response to ScreenRant's Rob Keyes, the DC Studios co-CEO said the following on Threads: "Well, no. I mean it's a true crime series so it jumps all over the place. But overall in continuity it's after MoT (and won't come out until then)."

When speaking to Crowley for Primetime, Gisondo was specifically asked where it takes place in the DCU continuity. The actor shared the following when addressing the original question:

ScreenRant: I know you got another Jimmy Olsen project in post-production with Man of Tomorrow. Can we get some clarification on timeline? Where does this take place in the DC world?

Skyler Gisondo: The show?

ScreenRant: Yeah.

Skyler Gisondo: I think it's somewhat before maybe the events of the movies, but leading-

ScreenRant: Both movies?

Skyler Gisondo: I think it's sort of somewhere in between the two. I don't know. I should probably know more about the answer, but I think the idea is it's kind of almost adjacent to this main timeline, but before the events of the second movie. And it's been really... Man of Tomorrow was so much fun. I love this group. I mean, it feels like we film these movies at this studio where there's really not a lot going on. We all stay at this one hotel across from the studio, and there's one street with one of every restaurant. We all just hang out all the time and have dinner every night, and it feels like summer camp. And then the show has been a really fun extension of that. I'm a huge fan of Tony and Dan's and American Vandal. And I think this is really unlike anything we've seen in this world. This Gorilla Grodd show, it's very Lance / Primetime adjacent, this kind of true-crime mockumentary thing. It's fun. You feel very free. Anything could happen at any time.

Filming is currently underway on the series, which was given an eight-episode order from HBO Max, with Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda set as the showrunners. Jimmy Tatro has been tapped as Gorilla Grodd, making the DCU the second live-action property to utilize him after he recurred in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow as part of The CW's Arrowverse.
