James Cameron's cyberpunk cult classic just got a long-overdue streaming overhaul.

One of the most critically and commercially successful directors of all time for The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), Titanic (1997), and the Avatar franchise (2009–present), Cameron has collaborated several times with Kathryn Bigelow, who were married from 1989 to 1991, and their relationship led to two movies, as Cameron developed and executive produced Bigelow's Point Break (1991), and co-wrote and produced Strange Days (1995), one of which has finally been restored.

Three decades after its debut, Strange Days just got a complete streaming overhaul. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, with a script written by Cameron and Jay Cocks, the 1995 dystopian sci-fi thriller follows a former police officer turned black-market dealer who is pulled into a dangerous web of murder, corruption, and blackmail in a grim futuristic Los Angeles during the final days of 1999.

Now, according to Inverse, Strange Days is available on Disney+ and Hulu in its correct aspect ratio, the original widescreen scope format of 2:39:1, restoring the film to the way it was meant to be seen. In the past, on streaming (including on HBO Max a couple of years ago), it was usually presented in a cropped 16:9 aspect ratio.

The film's cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Michael Wincott, Vincent D'Onofrio, Glenn Plummer, Brigitte Bako, Richard Edson, William Fichtner, and Josef Sommer.

At the time of its release, Strange Days received mostly positive reviews, resulting in a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics claiming that it doesn't fully capitalize on its futuristic concept, but it still delivers a stylishly directed and entertaining sci-fi thriller. It also has a 73% audience score.

However, Strange Days bombed at the box office in 1995, grossing just $17 million worldwide against its $42 million budget, which briefly stalled Kathryn Bigelow's career. Over time, however, the film has been reappraised by critics and audiences alike, eventually achieving cult classic status.

Faith and Philo in Strange Days (1995)

Fusing sci-fi with classic film noir, Strange Days tackles heavy themes including racism, police brutality, sexual violence, abuse of power, and voyeurism. While James Cameron first conceived the story in the mid-1980s, the finished film draws clear inspiration from major early 1990s events, including the beating of Rodney King and the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

For those revisiting Strange Days or experiencing it for the first time, this new streaming upgrade restores its wild cyberpunk vision in the way it was meant to be seen.
