Sinners has beaten every other movie on this year's Oscar nominations list by finding its place in the number of categories. Yet, despite this, the Ryan Coogler movie was clearly snubbed of one major nomination.

The 2026 Oscars nominations were announced on January 22, revealing that Sinners had landed nominations in a total of 16 categories. This proved to be a record-breaking feat, making it the only film in Academy Award history to secure nominations in more categories than any other movie in a single year.

However, despite this unprecedented showing, it is almost surprising that one actor from the 2025 horror movie did not land a nomination.

Jack O’Connell Deserved To Be Nominated In The Academy Awards’ Best Supporting Actor Category For Sinners

Delroy Lindo earned an Oscar nod by getting nominated in the Best Supporting Actor Category for Sinners. He very well deserves his nomination, but it is hard not to see how Jack O'Connell, too, should have gotten a nod in the same category. In Sinners' awards sweep, he feels like the missing piece after his incredible performance in the Ryan Coogler movie.

One of the most incredible scenes from Sinners is when all the vampires in the hive dance to Rocky Road to Dublin while O'Connell leads the pack. The entire sequence is single-handedly carried by Jack O'Connell, and his performance becomes the perfect portrayal of how his character has become the very embodiment of the monstrosity he and his people were once victims of.

Even in other scenes from the movie, Jack O'Connell perfectly captures how vicious yet bruised and lonely his character feels. He appears scary, yet one can understand why so many succumb to his charm. It would also be fair to say that Sinners would have felt incomplete and flat without O'Connell's magnetic screen presence.

Unfortunately, even though Sinners earned the Academy's approval in several categories, Jack O'Connell was snubbed.

After 2026’s Snub, 2027 Might Be O’Connell’s Year At The Oscars

For a while, Jack O'Connell primarily appeared in indie movies and niche TV shows. However, he is now finally getting more mainstream roles in popular franchises and also earned immense acclaim for his performance in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Since horror movies are finally getting the appreciation they deserve at the Oscars, the 28 Years Later sequel is bound to earn quite a few nomination nods at the 2027 Academy Awards.

Since many critics have noted Jack O'Connell's performance as the key driver of the zombie movie's terrors, it looks like he might land his first Oscar nomination in 2027.

While only time will tell what the future holds for the actor, his memorable performances in one movie after another are already paving the way for him to achieve great feats. He did get nominated for Sinners, but the likelihood of him becoming a future contender for the award seems even higher now.
