Suits: L.A. star Stephen Amell recently discussed the differences between the upcoming spinoff and the original Suits show, offering an exciting update on what the new series will be like. After an astonishing streaming success in 2023, the Suits franchise is returning with a brand-new show, Suits: L.A. Although this will not be the first time Suits gets a spinoff, Suits: L.A. will follow new characters as opposed to what Pearson did in 2019.

Given how great Suits’ series finale was, plus the fact that the show ran for nine seasons, a revival always seemed difficult to pull off. However, the “Suits resurgence” was bound to lead to a new project, even if not Suits season 10. Enter the Suits: L.A. spinoff, which will feature new characters based on Los Angeles instead of New York. While comparisons will be inevitable, Amell, who plays Ted Black in Suits: L.A., recently commented on how the new show shouldn’t be expected to be just what Suits was and will be different enough.

Suits: L.A. Shouldn’t Just Be Suits With A Different Setting

Suits: L.A. Must Be Different Enough From Suits

Speaking to the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Amell discussed the similarities between the Suits: L.A. spinoff and the original show, stating that the new series “is never going to be what the original was.” Amell went on to say that not taking the Suits: L.A. job over fear of it not being like the original would have been a “terrible” decision, noting that the new series is meant to be different from Suits. Amell stated that Suits: L.A. “is going to be different,” starting with the Los Angeles setting and the new film.

"No, it's never going to be what the original was, and that would be a terrible reason not to take the job. It's going to be different. It's set in a different place... and there will be people who watch the original but never watch our version, and that's okay. Great. Go find something on Apple TV+ then."

While Amell didn’t get into detail about how Suits: L.A. will differ from the original series, the fact that the spinoff is not aiming at being just a rehash of Suits with different characters and locations is great news. With so many sequels, spinoffs, and reboots of beloved shows happening every year, having yet another TV franchise make a comeback could perhaps not be that exciting. However, if Suits: L.A. finds its own identity and sets itself apart from the original show, it could be just as good as Suits was for entirely different reasons.

Suits: L.A.’s Pilot Will Tell How Different It Will Be From Suits

Suits’ First Episode Quickly Established The Show’s Premise

Judging a show for its pilot is not always fair, but I assume that the first episode of Suits: L.A. will tell us how different the new show will be compared to the original one. Suits’ premise was established very quickly in the pilot – Mike Ross had never gone to college but was so smart and had such a natural talent for being a lawyer that he was hired as Harvey Specter’s junior associate. Mike’s secret and photographic memory was the “catch” of Suits’ pilot, and it will be interesting to see what Suits: L.A.’s version of it will be.

Between “Goddamnit” and “What did you just say to me,” some expressions seemed to have been used in every episode of Suits, especially by Harvey.

Suits: L.A. does not have to imitate Suits and have its own secret or gimmick that sets the narrative for the rest of the show, but it must have something that sets itself apart from other legal dramas. This is why Suits: L.A.s pilot will be such an important episode to the franchise. Not only will it have to introduce the new characters and make us care about them, but it will also have to show how the spinoff will differ from Suits in the long term.
