Sons of Anarchy is returning with a huge twist, marking the start of a completely new and exciting era for the show. The 2000s were a big decade for crime drama TV shows, with projects like Breaking Bad, The Wire, and The Shield ranking among the best TV shows of all time. Also joining them as one of the best is Sons of Anarchy, created by Kurt Sutter and starring Charlie Hunnam as Jax Teller. Sons of Anarchy aired on FX from 2008 to 2014 for seven seasons, and it introduced the world to the title motorcycle club.
Sons of Anarchy followed Jax’s journey from VP of the club to becoming its President and his dramatic downfall, along with the many highs, lows, and losses that the club went through. The world of Sons of Anarchy expanded after the show’s end with the spinoff series Mayans M.C., which ran from 2018 to 2023 for five seasons, while plans for a prequel focusing on the club’s founders ultimately never happened.
Now, the universe of Sons of Anarchy is expanding one more time, but with a completely different and unexpected project. In August 2026, it was announced that Charlie Hunnam is executive producing the miniseries Legends, with Jonathan Groff as showrunner, and with Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi as the confirmed cast so far. Thanks to Legends, Sons of Anarchy is starting a new era, completely different from what it has done before.
Image via MovieStillsDBAlthough Sons of Anarchy had a pretty satisfying ending, with the stories of its main characters getting proper closure, there’s enough material for a sequel, especially one focused on Jax’s sons (as well as Opie’s). However, there are no plans at the time of writing for a sequel to Sons of Anarchy and SAMCRO, but Legends is the closest there will be to that.
Legends is a meta thriller miniseries that will see the above-mentioned cast playing fictionalized versions of themselves. The concept is that they will reunite at a fan convention over a decade after the ending of Sons of Anarchy, but the reunion will take a wild turn. The group will face a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they came across in Sons of Anarchy, thus blurring the line between reality and art.
It’s important to note that Sons of Anarchy’s creator isn’t involved in Legends, but Sutter has already expressed his support for Hunnam and the rest of the team. Legends isn’t a sequel in the traditional way, and it would fall more into the category of a “spiritual sequel” (also thanks to it bringing back actors whose characters died in the main show), but it’s an interesting type of continuation to Sons of Anarchy and a new chance to see some of its most beloved cast members.
Image via Everett CollectionThe meta-thriller concept of Legends is definitely a risky one given its connection to Sons of Anarchy and the success and popularity of the main show. Legends won’t continue the stories left by Sons of Anarchy, instead reuniting the audience with the main cast members of the show in a completely new scenario and on a still-unknown adventure, which is the riskiest and most intriguing part of the project.
Legends’ premise says the threat Hunnam and company will face is bigger than anything their characters dealt with in Sons of Anarchy, which is a lot, as SAMCRO went against white supremacists, crime bosses, a cartel, and even a Russian mob leader. Legends must find an exciting adventure for the cast that is believable within the show’s context and also reminiscent of their SAMCRO days, which can make way for some very fun stories.
Seeing the cast’s dynamic outside Charming and SAMCRO will also be quite interesting, as well as whether Legends will have them mirror their characters to some extent. It’s to be seen if more former SAMCRO cast members will join Legends (such as Ryan Hurst and David Labrava) and if more plot details will be revealed, but as risky as it is, it also has great potential.
