Michael Fassbender's spy thriller series on Paramount+ has just come from a masterpiece of a season, but it has sadly now seen the end of an era. Fassbender's best movies and TV shows are proof of the major star that he is. From franchise releases like several X-Men movies at Fox to Oscar-nominated roles in 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs, he has done it all.
Fassbender is one of the major Hollywood stars to have surfed the wave of popularity that spy thriller series are currently on. Over the past few years, many genre shows have risen on different streaming services. There is a spy show for every type of viewer, with a comedy in the form of Peacock's Ponies, an action-focused show in Netflix's The Night Agent, and more.
Other major spy thriller series released in the last few years include Apple TV's Slow Horses, Netflix's Black Doves, Prime Video's Citadel, and more. As for Fassbender's role in the genre, he recently starred in Steven Soderbergh's intense spy thriller movie Black Bag, where he had to investigate Cate Blanchett's Kathryn St. Jean, his character's wife.
On the small screen, Fassbender stars in Paramount+'s The Agency. The spy thriller series is based on the French show Le Bureau des Legendes. The Agency season 2 released all of its 10 episodes on Paramount+ on June 21. The series has enjoyed a nice period of streaming dominance, but it had to come to an end at some point.
Michael Fassbender's The Agency Fires Its Last Shot On Paramount+ (For Now)
At the time of writing, The Agency is no longer on Paramount+'s Top 10 TV shows chart, according to FlixPatrol. In fact, the spy thriller series' last time on the coveted list was on Tuesday, August 25, when it ranked 10th. Currently, Paramount+'s top shows around the world include projects like the Taylor Sheridan series Lioness, Yellowstone, Dutton Ranch, and Tulsa King. The Agency leaving Paramount+'s global chart is significant because Fassbender's spy series had been trending on the streaming service worldwide since The Agency season 2 had been released on the streamer.
That said, while The Agency might no longer be on the streaming service's global charts, nor is it among Paramount+'s most-watched TV shows in the United States, Fassbender's spy thriller series is still enjoying success in a few countries. At the time of writing, The Agency is trending in three countries. The Paramount+ spy series ranks 2nd in Italy, and 7th in both Ireland and the United Kingdom. Based on how over two months have passed since The Agency season 2's release, the show is unlikely to return to Paramount+'s global Top 10, at least for now.
The Agency Season 3's Announcement Is A Matter Of Time
Image courtesy of Paramount+This might be the end of an era for Fassbender's The Agency, but it does not mean that the show is not coming back. After all, The Agency season 2 became an instant global streaming hit for Paramount+ and went on to stay on the streamer's global Top 10 for over two months. That was a successful run. Additionally, based on a report from The Ankler's Lesley Goldberg, The Agency season 3 is going to happen, with the show being one of the original projects at Paramount+ that will return for more, like Dutton Ranch and Tulsa King.
Adding to that is the fact that the show The Agency is based on, France's Le Bureau des Legendes, ran for five seasons. As such, Fassbender's spy thriller series still has plenty of source material left to adapt. Given how long The Agency managed to trend on the streaming service around the world after the release of season 2, it will likely be renewed for season 3.
