Since its release, the coming-of-age TV drama has since become a widely beloved series. The show debuted in 2000, introducing the world to the world of Rory (Alexis Bledel) and her single mom Lorelai (Parenthood's Lauren Graham). Over 150 episodes aired across the show's seven seasons, many of which are extremely highly rated by IMDb users.
Netflix has now announced that Gilmore Girls will be making its departure from the platform before long. In an apologetic post, Netflix revealed that all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls will be leaving on June 30. The streamer emphasizes the show's importance in this post, writing, "It's a show? It's a lifestyle. It's a religion."
Netflix's post does not tell the full story, however, about the future of the Gilmore Girls IP. The show's follow-up revival series, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, will remain on Netflix despite the flagship series' departure. Still, viewers will only have a short time to rerun their favorite episodes of Gilmore Girls before it leaves its streaming home.
A Year in the Life is a Netflix revival series that was released in 2016. Boasting just four episodes in total, the miniseries followed up on Rory and Lorelai's lives about a decade later.
Even with some massive shoes to fill, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was pretty well received. The show holds a Certified Fresh 87% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, rivaling the reception of many of the show's original seasons. Audiences thought slightly less of it, giving it a 68% Popcornmeter approval overall.
Losing Gilmore Girls on its platform could come as a major disappointment for some Netflix subscribers. This move was not entirely unexpected, though, as sad as it may be for fans. Since Netflix acquired streaming rights to Gilmore Girls several years ago, it was known that their license would expire on July 1, 2026. It appears now that this date will hold, as they have not been able to otherwise save the series.
Now, the rights will turn back over to Warner Bros. unless they get bought by another service. Especially amidst their ongoing sale, Warner Bros. may be eager to hold on to a legacy show like Gilmore Girls. In this case, the streamer might push to get the series back on Max. Wherever the show lands, there will be droves of eager fans waiting to watch and rewatch this iconic 2000s series.
