Mattel offers a rollercoaster of updates as the Matchbox movie sets its release date and the company turns its eye to… Tony the Tattooed Man? Get a tiny new look at The Death of Robin Hood. Plus, Daredevil: Born Again is preparing to cast some criminals for season 3. Spoilers, assemble!

Io9 2025 Spoiler

The Temple

Deadline reports Cory Michael Smith, Vic Carmen Sonne, Tamara Podemski, and Daniel Zolghadri will star in The Temple, a sci-fi horror movie from Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis. The story concerns “an orphaned millionaire who enlists the help of a radiation scientist to communicate with the ghosts of his parents.”

Tony the Tattooed Man

Deadline has word Tracie Laymon (Bob Travino Likes It) has been hired to write and direct a movie based on Tony the Tattooed Man for Mattel Studios. Taking inspiration from a “illustratable action figure” briefly on the market in 1992, the toy encouraged kids to “decorate his body with soluble temporary tattoos applied by hand and to continually customize and reimagine his appearance.” The film adaptation is said to “reimagine the cult-favorite action figure as the centerpiece of a character-driven drama that blends surreal fantasy with emotional depth.” In a press release, Laymon stated she was “immediately drawn to Tony the Tattooed Man from the minute I saw his name and then learned about his short-lived journey as a discontinued toy. His story is a reminder of the healing power of second chances and not judging a book – or a person – by their cover, a message I believe the world needs right now. It is an honor to partner with Mattel, who are true allies for artists, on a film that will help restore our faith in humanity.”

The Last of Us

Deadline reports Clea DuVall and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. have joined the cast of The Last of Us. DuVall is said to play an unknown member of the cult of the Seraphites while Lendeborg will replace Danny Ramirez in the role of Manny.

Pluribus

Vince Gilligan tells The Hollywood Reporter that work is progressing on the show’s second season—but not to expect it back later this year, or potentially even next.

My writers are plugging away…. It takes a long time to come up with these episodes. We are deeper into the process at this moment than I would like, considering how few episodes we have figured out. But it takes some time, just as it did the first season.

We appreciate everybody’s patience, but it ain’t gonna be The Pitt, coming back every year. I wish it would be because it’s an awesome show that’s old-school, like we used to do The X-Files [when] we’d come back the same month every year. It will not be like The Pitt. We’ll come back the same month—just the question is what year.

Daredevil: Born Again

Finally, Backstage (via Screen Rant) reports Daredevil: Born Again is now casting actors to play “Criminal Gang Members,” “Dangerous Criminals,” and “Intimidating Officers” in the third season of Daredevil: Born Again.
