Before Squid Game came to a divisive end last year, it was clear Netflix wanted to expand it. Along with a game show or two, it planned to do this with an American-focused spinoff, with David Fincher said to be in charge of the project. And with Cate Blanchett showing up in the original show’s series finale, it sure seemed like something was to come of that, yeah?
Not anymore, apparently, since The Playlist recently published a report alleging this potential series has been scrapped. Reportedly codenamed Heckler, the series was to shoot in the UK and had a writer in Utopia creator David Kelly. But in the years since wanting it, Netflix is said to be looking at Squid Game from another angle. Sources speaking to Playlist suggest spinoffs will now be tailored to different territories rather than just the US, similar to what the streamer already does with Love is Blind. Whatever those shows look like, the US one won’t be a part of them, and Fincher’s show wasn’t planned to revolve around her character.
Sad news for anyone looking forward to it, or at least the idea of Cate Blanchett silently staring people down and using her presence to bend them to her will. For anyone else who felt like Netflix franchising out Squid Game missed the point of creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s themes, this is some good news as the game show spinoff prepares for its own celebrity offshoot in the next few years.
