ExpressVPN has just revamped its subscription offering, adding three new membership tiers for greater flexibility.
Starting from today, September 2, you can choose between a Basic, Advanced, or Pro plan depending on your needs. The new plans retain the usual 30-day money-back guarantee and even offer more simultaneous connections than ever before – up to a maximum of 14 from 8, depending on the plan you choose.
The move, which the provider deems as "one of the most significant changes in the company’s 16-year history," also means that ExpressVPN has finally closed the long-standing pricing gap between itself and some of the best VPNs out there – something we've marked it down for continuously in recent years.
What's changed?
Since its launch in 2009, ExpressVPN has offered only one type of membership. The only thing users had to choose was the preferred duration for their subscription.
"That simplicity helped build one of the world’s most trusted privacy services. But the internet has changed. So have the ways people use it, and what they need to stay protected," said the provider.
Now, all new ExpressVPN customers will choose between three different membership tiers, available at three different lengths. The longer the term, the more value you'll get – with the one-year and two-year plans adding three and four months of free protection on top, respectively.
Crucially, the maximum device allowance has also increased across all tiers – rising from eight to 10 on the Basic plan – despite the price reduction.
Here's a quick overview of ExpressVPN plans:
- Basic – You have access to the virtual private network (VPN) service and a DNS-based ad blocking tool on up to 10 devices simultaneously. Starting from as little as the equivalent of $3.49 a month.
- Advanced – Alongside the VPN and DNS-based ad blocking tool, you can also access a built-in password manager (ExpressVPN Keys), 3 days of unlimited international mobile data via its eSIM service, ID monitoring with fraud alerts, and identity restoration. Plus, you can connect 12 devices simultaneously, from only $4.49 a month.
- Pro – On top of the Advanced offering, you get access to 5 days of unlimited eSIM data, monthly credit reports, dedicated IP, and data removal services. Device allowance raises here to 14, from a starting price of $7.49 a month.
Each tier is thought to meet different user needs, the provider explains, while continuing to deliver the core protection that people need and expect.
"Some [users] still want the same reliable VPN experience they’ve always had. Others are asking for more: travel data, password security, identity monitoring, or broader device coverage," said ExpressVPN, ensuring that "privacy remains at the heart of every plan."
It's important to note that ExpressVPN’s Identity Defender, which includes Identity Monitoring and Data Removal services, is available solely to users based in the US at the time of writing.
Furthermore, all Advanced and Pro subscribers also get exclusive discounts on the provider router with built-in VPN, ExpressVPN Aircove – up to 50% and 75% off, respectively.
Nothing changes for everyone who already has an active ExpressVPN subscription, though. That said, existing users could choose to move to a new plan if they wish.
