Selena Gomez Confesses She's "a Little Too Old" to Be a Pop Star Anymore
Who says you can’t close a chapter of your life?
Not Selena Gomez, who admitted that she may be hanging up her professional music career. In fact, the 32-year-old recently revealed that music may take the backseat as she focusses on acting.
“I love storytelling, and my music career is separate,” Selena told Saoirse Ronan during their Variety Actors on Actors conversation published Dec. 11. “However, I don’t see that being always forever thing professionally,”
Selena noted that music will always be a constant, thanks for her boyfriend, producer Benny Blanco.
“I’ll always have music in my life because my partner’s a musician,” she said. “And I love singing and writing and having moments to do it for fun.”
The Emilia Pérez star explained that creating music is personal verses playing a character that allows her to be someone else.
“It can be a little vulnerable when you’re putting yourself out there versus escaping into a character,” she added. “Definitely think my strong suit is probably acting.”
She continued, “But one thing I’m proud of in music is being able to tell a story—my favorite songs are mostly ballads, and they’re very transparent and honest.”
The Disney channel alum dropped her first single in 2008. Over the course of her career, the Wizards of Waverly Place alum has released three studio albums, including Rare in 2020, and a series of hit singles.

After over a decade of working as a musician and actress though, Selena believes that she may have outgrown the popstar life.
“I think I might be a little too old for the pop-star life,” she said. “I’m genuinely so happy to just be in this new era of my life, because in a lot of ways, it’s just the beginning.”
And while the Only Murders in the Building star has pressed pause on music, she’s turning up the volume on the acclaim that has followed her recent roles. Selena earned two Golden Globes nominations for her roles in Only Murders in the Building and Emilia Pérez respectively.
After the nominations were announced, Selena celebrated her Only Murders fam in one slide, and her first Golden Globe film nomination in another.
Next to a clip of Selena double over in tears she wrote on her Dec. 9 Instagram Story, "I don't even know what to write... I'm so proud of @Zoe Saldana and I am so grateful and honored @goldenglobes."
