Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim MQ-9 drone kill using new air defense system

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says it shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over Hormozgan province using a previously unknown air defense system called Arash-e Kamangir. The intercept allegedly took place near Qeshm Island, a sliver of land sitting at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategically sensitive waterways on Earth.

If the claim holds up, it would mark the first combat deployment of a system Iran has been developing as part of a broader pivot toward mobile, harder-to-detect defense platforms. The name translates to “Arash the Archer,” a reference to a hero from Persian mythology.

A $30 million target flying slow

The MQ-9 Reaper is one of the US military’s workhorse surveillance and strike drones. It’s capable, versatile, and expensive, running roughly $30 million per unit.

Iranian state media described the Arash-e Kamangir as a mobile, low-cost interceptor equipped with advanced stealth-detection capabilities. The emphasis on mobility and affordability suggests Tehran is building its air defense doctrine around the idea that you don’t need to outspend your opponent.

A pattern of claims, and a pattern of losses

This isn’t the only MQ-9 downing Iran has reported. Between July and August 2026, the IRGC claimed additional Reaper kills across multiple provinces, including Bushehr and Ahvaz.

On the US side, officials have acknowledged the loss of approximately 30 MQ-9 Reapers since operations began in 2026. Thirty Reapers at $30 million apiece works out to roughly $900 million in hardware, not counting the intelligence-gathering capability lost with each airframe.

Independent verification of individual IRGC claims remains thin. Iran has a well-documented history of amplifying its indigenous military achievements, sometimes beyond what the evidence supports.

Why mobile and cheap matters more than big and complex

The Arash-e Kamangir fits into a strategic shift that analysts have been tracking for some time. Iran’s larger, more complex air defense systems, including Russian-supplied S-300 missile batteries, have suffered attrition during the current conflict. Those systems are expensive to maintain, difficult to replace, and, critically, easier to locate and target.

Mobile interceptors solve several of those problems simultaneously. They’re harder to find, cheaper to lose, and can be dispersed across a wider geographic area. The tradeoff is typically reduced capability against high-end threats like stealth aircraft or cruise missiles. But against a slow-flying drone like the MQ-9, a cheaper system may be perfectly adequate.

The Strait of Hormuz context adds another layer of complexity. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil passes through that chokepoint.
