iOS 18: Why Does Siri on the iPhone Look the Same as Before?

2 days ago 2

iOS 18 was officially released today, bringing all sorts of improvements such as formatting and animations to Messages and more customization of the home and lock screens. But there's one change you may have expected to see that won't show up on your iPhone -- yet.

At its Glowtime September event to announce the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, AirPods 4 and the Apple Watch Series 10, Apple spent nearly 20 minutes showing off the new Apple Intelligence features, which will include a radically updated look when you invoke Siri.

Instead of the animated sphere that appears at the bottom of the iPhone screen, the new design will fill the edges of the entire screen with a glowing spectrum of colors, visibly warping objects as if the screen is made of liquid or iridescent fabric.

a pink glow erupts from the Sleep/Wake button, which becomes a glowing colorful border around the screen. In the last panel, a Siri request for "What time is it in Stockholm" is shown with the answer.

But if you've installed iOS 18 today, you'll still see the familiar animated orb when you ask Siri for help. Here's why.

Why am I still seeing the old Siri on iOS 18?

The new Siri design is a feature of Apple Intelligence that will start to arrive in the next iOS update, iOS 18.1. Currently, iOS 18.1 is available only in beta form for developers, and even then it contains only a few of the many features Apple has touted in Apple Intelligence.

Apple said Apple Intelligence will start rolling out in October with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and MacOS Sequoia 15.1, with more features launching in the coming months.

Keep in mind that Apple Intelligence will work only on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and later models. So even when iOS 18.1 is available, you still may not see the new Siri animation on older phones. We'll have to see for ourselves next month.
