Inside Benicio del Toro's Private World as Dad to Daughter Delilah

It's not as if Benicio del Toro went anywhere, but now he's noticeably everywhere.

Of course, that has something to do with it being awards season and the 2026 Oscar nominee has been attending one show after another—including the Actor Awards with his 14-year-old daughter Delilah—following his hoot of a supporting turn as a stealth-activist karate instructor in One Battle After Another.

One wonders, in fact, just how far outside his comfort zone Del Toro had to reach to play cool-as-a-cucumber sensei Sergio St. Carlos, who gives Leonardo DiCaprio's frantic dad Bob Ferguson a major assist in finding his missing daughter Willa, played by Chase Infiniti.

Probably not far.

And not only because Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the part for Del Toro, after which the Puerto Rican star made some key changes that ended up setting the tone for the rest of the movie.

"My character was introduced by killing someone in my dojo," Del Toro said in December on the Los Angeles Times' The Envelope Oscar Actors Roundtable. "So I asked [PTA], 'OK, if I kill this guy in the dojo, I'm not going to drive Leo anywhere! We have to get rid of the body and we're going to have to clean the dojo, or set it on fire."

Ultimately, "Why am I doing that?" he explained. "So, from there, it evolved into, 'We're not killing anybody.'"

But that's just the kind of confidence Del Toro—who also starred in Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme last year—brings with him to any set now, that swagger well-earned after nearly 40 years in Hollywood, which includes a Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for 2000's Traffic.

And yet despite having the sort of presence that instantly elevates every scene he's in, Del Toro saves his drama for the screen, leading a very private life when he's not compelled to speak about himself while promoting films.

Which he doesn't really do even then.

“Sometimes you read it or see it and it’s like, well, that’s not really what I meant at all,” he told The Hollywood Reporter recently about his aversion to interviews. “It shakes you a bit. It becomes … permanent.”

But while he called the amount of attention he's been getting lately "bizarre," it was also "an honor" to be recognized for OBAA, which is nominated for 13 Oscars heading into the March 15 ceremony at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre.

"It’s huge," Del Toro said. "But it’s very surprising. There’s something about it that makes me want to not believe it. And I’m trying to enjoy this wave. What I’ve learned about it is, let it rip. It’s beyond my control. There’s nothing I can do."

The wave did give him the opportunity to bring his only child to an award show, a rare peek at his life as a girl dad.

Delilah's mom is model Kimberly Stewart, 46, who was not in a relationship with Del Toro, per se, when they became parents.

Confirming Stewart's pregnancy in April 2011, they said in a statement that Usual Suspects star was "very supportive" and, "although they are not a couple, they are looking forward to the arrival of the baby."

"I had her at the right time," Stewart, who shares Delilah's Aug. 21 birthday, told HELLO! in 2015. "I got all the partying out of my system and I just wanted to be with her all the time. I've been a stay-at-home mother since she was born and I've loved every second."

Her then-4-year-old, she continued, was "sassy and has great manners—I really instilled that from a young age—so she's always saying 'please' and 'thank you.'"

At the time, Stewart—the second of Rod Stewart's eight kids—said she was "dating here and there, but no one who I would want to introduce Delilah to."

Delilah also happened to be Rod's first grandchild, the "Forever Young" singer telling E! when she was born that his joy was "indescribable."

"We had everyone at the hospital to help Kimberly," Rod said. "I won't say we always agree, but we get along."

Everyone included Del Toro, who has remained close to Stewart—and her family—as a co-parent.

"I try to stay under the radar now," he told the New Zealand Herald in 2016. "I'm a father and that changes everything...I'm thinking about the future of another human being who I'm in love with."

And though he has primarily kept that part of his life out of the public eye, with showbiz coursing through Delilah's genes—"I might pull the Oscar out to show to my daughter," Del Toro quipped to Port in 2015."Grandpa has a lot of stuff, but he ain't got one of those"—he's been preparing, just in case she takes after him.

While he predicted to E! in 2015 that she was going to be a teacher because "she likes telling me what to do," more recently he's come around to the idea of Delilah following in his footsteps.

"I don't come from a family of theater people or movie people, so they were very nervous with me," Del Toro said on a June 2025 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "I come from a family of professionals, not in the movie world or the theater world, so they were very concerned."

But, he added, "My daughter, if she wants to be a lawyer, great. The next day, she wants to be a designer, great. But I do know that if she wants to be an actress, you just have to let her be."

So, perhaps consider their father-daughter date at the Actor Awards a trial run for the teen.
