The latest Infinity Nikki update brought some changes to the shop icons and players are not happy with the new direction that InFold seems to be taking the game. The update moved several shop-related icons to the main game screen and made them very prominent and difficult to ignore. The change was likely made to encourage more players to potentially buy in-game goods and currency for real money, which is crucial for the otherwise free cozy exploration title to remain afloat.

Many fans agree that adding the new icons to the main screen and making them gold and sparkling is not the right way to go about it, and the marketing ploy is being described as underhanded. A movement to remove the new intrusive shop icons was started by Darklillies on Reddit, who encourages other fans to join in.

Other Players Are Encouraged To Join In On The Protest

The Reddit post is a heartfelt letter to players who may be used to marketing tactics that are less than ideal. The Redditor calls developers InFold out for pulling players in with the beautiful graphics and extremely frequent updates, while the devs have "slowly and quietly been pulling the rug further and further back hoping no one will notice." It's not working, though, as players are certainly noticing.

I Was Shocked Infinity Nikki's Story Has Me This Hooked

Infinity Nikki is a game filled with beautiful outfits, hairstyles, & accessories. However, the story behind the clothes is much deeper than expected.

Darklillies encourages players to respond now while they still have the chance to make a difference in the direction the game takes. "I’m so tired of every single place, company, site, trying to drain me of money," they write, adding that people frequently accept this as a part of games and life. It doesn't have to be like that, though, and Darklillies encourages all fans of the title who agree to do something about it. Fans are being asked to send in bug reports to report the change like it's a bug. By presenting the design choice as a flaw, the Redditor hopes that InFold will be forced to actually acknowledge and respond to the outcry, rather than regular complaints which are easier to overlook.

Our Take: We Hope Infinity Nikki Finds A Good Middle Ground To Please Both Paying And Non-Paying Customers

Infinity Nikki Has Reached Millions Of People

I've been playing Infinity Nikki since launch and am still constantly blown away that such an immersive, well-made, and overall just gorgeous game could be free. I'm sure the game's fans realize that for a game like this to be free, it needs to have paying customers to fund it. But, as Darklillies notes, that doesn't mean InFold should sacrifice the game's enjoyment by adding glaring ads for the shops.

Free-to-play gaming has been around for a long time and companies certainly don't always get it right. Until recently, most free games, especially mobile titles, have embraced the cluttered, in-your-face ads for the item shops. Time limits and energy systems were some of the most common ways for games to get players to pay out.

But games like Genshin Impact have shown that it's possible to get players to pay real money without making them feel like they need to. When games are good enough, players will often choose to use their hard-earned money to help keep the game alive. Infinity Nikki is a stunning game with a lot to offer the cozy gaming community, and I hope that it finds a good middle ground that suits both the company behind it and its customers, the players.
