A Stardew Valley fan was so surprised to find out that Sam had a day job at the museum that they thought the detail was added in the latest update. In reality, Sam's side gig has been a part of the game from the beginning and is just one more way that developer ConcernedApe brings the characters of Pelican Town to life with realistic details.
Reddit user kay-b808 came across the villager Sam at the museum, jamming out to something on his headphones while sweeping. Sam is so easy to miss because he stands in a part of the museum that players don't often have a reason to visit, so finding him diligently working at his post in the Museum comes as somewhat of a shock.
Another player who goes by bpdredheadedlefty on Reddit was just as surprised to realize this, stating "I'm married to the man and didn't know he did this." It seems that after marriage, Sam stops working at the museum to stay at the farm and help the player, instead. As a result, the museum gig is a short and little-known part of Sam's life.
Running JojaMart Out Of Town In Stardew Valley Has Some Negative Repercussions
Some Stardew Valley Characters Relied On The Store For A Living
Stardew Valley has two different playthrough options: one that allows the big company, JojaMart, to thrive and one that puts JojaMart out of business in favor of restoring the town's old community center. JojaMart is clearly meant to represent the evil greedy corporation in the game, so the JojaMart run is an unpopular choice among Stardew Valley players.

Marnie can be difficult to find in Stardew Valley. Here’s a complete guide to her shop hours, as well as where you can run into her off-duty.
Still, the fact remains that a job is a job, and even fictional characters need to put food on their tables somehow. When players cause JojaMart to shut down in the Community Center playthrough, several townspeople lose their jobs. Sam is one of those affected by the closure, which leads him to get another job in the Artifacts and Minerals section of the museum.
Stardew Valley Charms Players With Its Realistic Characters
Life Goes On Even When Players Aren't Part Of It
Sam may have found himself a new job after JojaMart is gone, but not all characters are as lucky. As king-of-new_york points out, "Poor Shane doesn't get a new job after Joja leaves." Shane is one of the more troubled marriage candidates in Stardew Valley and losing his JojaMart job will cause him to simply stand around at Marnie's ranch with seemingly nothing to do until he heads off to the saloon in the evening. This seems pretty sad, and having no drive or job may be a contributing factor to Shane's struggle to have a positive outlook on life.
Shane and Sam are two great examples of the way developer ConcernedApe managed to imbue every character in the cozy farming sim with realistic personalities. The lives of Stardew Valley characters seem to continue even when players aren't looking, from the way that Marnie is never at her post to finding Sam doing his best in a town that has just lost one of its biggest sources of jobs.
