I've been reviewing Oukitel rugged phones for some time now, and the one thing that trips me up with these devices is the performance. Yes, they can all take a serious beating and have batteries that shame nearly all other devices, but they have a reputation for being slow and laggy.

This issue doesn't haunt all of Oukitel's phones, but it certainly does come up on lower-end devices. But considering the brand's better-performing phones (such as the WP60) sell for a mere $280, it's hard to deny them as a viable option.
Let's talk about this specific model.
My experience
As usual, the first thing I noticed about the WP60 is its heft. Yeah, this phone is just as heavy as most of their devices. Coming in at 360g, that's 161g more than my Pixel 9 Pro. When I took it out of the box, I realized just how big it is: measuring 7.244 x 3.42 x .58 inches, with a whopping 7.2-inch display and 85% screen-to-body ratio.
When you compare the WP60 next to the Pixel 9 Pro, you get a pretty good idea of just how big this phone is. In hand, it seems to be even bigger. The WP60 is like having a small tablet in your hand.

When I first read the specs of the WP60, I was shocked at the amount of memory it claimed it had. The first number I spotted was 48GB. Shortly thereafter, I realized the device I was sent only had 16GB of memory, which is expandable up to 48GB via the memory expansion features.
I've never been a big fan of the memory expansion option for a couple of reasons. One, I don't find that the expanded memory makes a noticeable improvement on performance. Two, when enabling memory expansion, you lose storage space. Imagine if you want to bump that 16GB of RAM to 48GB, you lose 32GB of storage space, which is reason enough not to bother with the feature.
Even with only 16GB of RAM, the WP60 felt as fast (if not faster) than any budget Android phone I've used. Apps open and install quickly, animations are smooth, and there's next to no lag in switching between apps.
There is one thing that caught me by surprise. I went to check for an Android system update and it wanted permission for System Update to make and manage phone calls. No thanks on that.
Currently, the WP60 runs Android 15, and I'm not sure if or when it will be updated to version 16. Given Android 16 is a bigger upgrade than we've seen in some time, it's hard to know if this phone will even support it. That being said, Android 15 runs very well on this device.
The Smart Key
The WP60 also includes a handy little feature called the Smart Key. With this feature, you can configure the left-side button (it's red, so you can't miss it) for specific actions. There are three actions: single click, double click, and triple click. You can configure each click to do one of the following requests:
- Start recording audio
- Open flashlight
- Screen shot
- Open the underwater camera
- Open SOS
You can find the Smart Key option in the Settings app (labeled Smart Key).
A good enough camera
As far as the camera is concerned, I have no qualms with the WP60. No, it's not on par with the Pixel 9 Pro, but it does have a decent macro camera, and the portrait option works fairly well. If a high-quality, flagship camera is your main priority, you'll want to pass on the WP60. If you want good photos with plenty of options (pro, slow-motion video, GIF, time-lapse, QR Code, Panorama, and Night-View), the WP60 is certainly viable.
As you can see, the Macro option does have its limitations when getting very close to a subject.
ZDNET's buying advice
Usually, it's pretty easy to lock down who Oukitel's phones are for. Most often, they are those who work in rough conditions and need a device that can shrug off the elements. The WP60 is a bit different because it performs well enough to be useful for other types of people. That being said, you have to be okay with a very heavy brick of a phone that looks nothing like what most users carry around.

At the same time, if you want a phone with a battery that lasts multiple days without a charge, you can't go wrong with Oukitel. This phone has a 10,000 mAh battery, and you won't find any flagship device with one that large. I've used many an Oukitel phone with 10,000 mAh batteries, and they never fail to have me saying, "Will this battery ever run out of juice?"
If you need a rugged device that performs very well and includes a battery that will last for days, this is the phone you want. If looks, a best-in-show camera, portability, and popularity are your key needs, just buy a Pixel.
