The Golden Bachelorette season 1 has come to an end and I’m still shocked that Joan Vassos chose Chock Chapple despite his major red flags throughout the disappointing season of the show. Joan, who originally appeared on Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor, wasn’t as well-versed as some of the other cast members when she was named the next lead. Having left The Golden Bachelor early, Joan had a bit of experience coming into the series, but she was prepared for the ride of a lifetime joining The Golden Bachelorette season 1 as the inaugural lead for the spin-off.

While Joan’s time as the lead got off to a great start, things got a bit more difficult as the season continued. Though she was happy to be getting along with the guys that were cast for her, there were some she was connecting with more than others. Despite some issues with the cast of The Golden Bachelorette season 1, Joan quickly connected with a group of front-runners led by Chock, including Mark Anderson, Jordan Heller, Pascal Ibgui, and Guy Gansert. Though she was hoping one of them would be a lasting love, Joan wasn’t confident about her final choice.

Although Joan lacked confidence in some of the men she was moving quickly toward the end of the experience with, she was excitedly preparing to make her choice as the days dwindled down. When it came down to Guy and Chock, Bachelor Nation began to wonder if Joan would end up alone. Personally, I thought Joan wouldn’t wind up with either of her final two, as the connections she had with both seemed too flimsy to end in an engagement, or even a long-term relationship. Joan chose Chock, and I’m genuinely surprised she was able to ignore his red flags.

The Golden Bachelorette Sparked Excitement In Bachelor Nation

Viewers Were Excited For A More Successful Spin-Off

Although Bachelor Nation struggled with The Golden Bachelor, there was still a lot of excitement surrounding The Golden Bachelorette. Whether Bachelor Nation was looking for a chance to right the wrongs of Gerry’s season, or were simply excited for the Bachelorette version of the Golden side of the series, the excitement was palpable. I was feeling ready for a change when The Golden Bachelorette announcement came out and Joan was selected as the surprising lead. I found it thrilling that someone who hadn’t even in the endgame of the season would get a shot at being the next Bachelorette lead.

The rest of Bachelor Nation seemed hopeful that the series would be a success, which was likely very pressurizing for Joan and the rest of the cast. Though The Bachelor and its spin-offs aren’t known for their relationships having much longevity, it was clear that the Golden series held higher expectations from the start. Viewers were looking for people who were in more mature stages of life to have more mature relationships, meaning they expected them to last. Gerry and Theresa Nist’s divorce was such a shock to Bachelor Nation that even through the excitement, the pressure was certainly high.

Joan Vassos Was A Compassionate, But Unexciting Lead

She Was Too Diplomatic With Her Feelings

When The Golden Bachelorette got started, Joan seemed to be an exciting, sweet lead who was ready to find someone long-term. While she didn’t change throughout her time on the series, Joan wasn’t an exciting lead in the way some hoped she would be. Though I enjoyed Joan, I was concerned with how diplomatic she was in the opening episodes. The difference between how opinionated she seemed in her confessional interviews and with the guys themselves was staggering, and that continued throughout The Golden Bachelorette, which was disappointing to watch. While she was a compassionate lead, she wasn’t always interesting.

The Cast Of The Golden Bachelorette Season 1 Was Disappointing

There Were Too Many Red Flags

Although the cast of The Golden Bachelorette was likely never going to live up to the incredible cast of The Golden Bachelor season 1, the series tried to find guys who were dynamic, interesting, and feasible for Joan. While some of the cast members were able to live up to the hype, like sweet Charles Ling who some hope to see again on the franchise, others were trouble from the start. There were men on The Golden Bachelorette who had restraining orders against them, which showed a major flaw in casting, and others who were simply unfit for the show.

Should The Golden Bachelor Come Back After Two Tough Seasons?

It May Need To Take A Break

Although Joan and Chock’s relationship seemed to be going smoothly throughout The Golden Bachelorette, his red flags were abundant. Chock appeared to be someone who isolated himself from the rest of the cast, was admittedly non-committal in past relationships, and showed some signs of love-bombing Joan throughout the season. I wasn’t excited to see her choose him in the end, and I was shocked to see their relationship still going strong. I believe the shows should take a break before returning for another season to reevaluate their standards, practices, and production. The Golden Bachelorette and Bachelor stars deserve better.
