EXCLUSIVE: Hulu is developing The Haunting of Alejandra, a series adaptation of the 2023 horror novel by V. Castro, with Steven Paul Martinez as writer and executive producer.
The Haunting of Alejandra is billed as a recurring series blending psychological horror and social commentary that explores supernatural Mexican mythology. Wife, lawyer and millennial mom Alejandra finds herself struggling psychologically on maternity leave, but quickly finds it’s not run-of-the-mill postpartum; instead, she’s in a fight-to-the-death struggle with the legend of the famous La Llorona.
20th Television is the studio behind the project, whose other executive producers include Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego of Hyphenate Media, and Gigi Saul Guerrero and Raynor Shima of Luchagoro. Author Castro will produce.
Writer-EP Martinez was most recently staffed on two seasons of CBS’s So Help Me Todd. Prior to that, he was a producer on the CBS series Bull, where he got his start in TV writing. Martinez’s feature Stealing Santa is currently set up at Paramount. He is repped by Valor Entertainment, Innovative Artists, and Marios Rush Law.
Guerrero is a multi-hyphenate who previously directed the biopic Jenni, based on the life of Mexican-American singer-songwriter and actress Jenni Rivera, which was produced by Donald DeLine and Mucho Mas. Her feature directorial debut was Culture Shock as part of the Hulu/Blumhouse Into the Dark series, which landed her a first-look film & TV deal with Blumhouse. Last year, she wrote and directed the new “Shot on iPhone” commercial as a short film for Apple. Titled El Lazo De Petra, it has 87M views on YouTube. Guerrero was also attached to direct Santa Muerte for Screen Gems and 10/31 for Orion Pictures. In TV, she was attached to a CBSTVS pilot based on the novel Lola, has directed on the series The Purge for USA/Syfy, and directed the pilot for La Hora Marcada for Vix. She and Shima and their Luchagoro Productions are repped by Valor Entertainment, Verve, and MiloknayWeiner.
Longoria and Abrego’s Hyphenate Media has recently worked on series including Nexaca, Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain, and Land of Women. Upcoming, they have the Kim Kardashian comedy The Fifth Wheel, which Longoria is directing for Netflix. She is repped by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.
