It’s England vs Sri Lanka in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Although Sri Lanka didn’t enter the tournament as favorites, their dominating win against Australia certainly raised expectations among fans that they can go deep into the tournament, especially given their home conditions advantage. However, that dominance took a mighty blow after they lost their final group stage game to Zimbabwe, who defeated them convincingly by six wickets.

The English aren’t without a few problems of their own. They’ve not won games very convincingly – even against associate nations – and they even lost a relatively moderate run chase against West Indies after starting well.

In the Sri Lankan camp, opener Pathum Nissanka is enjoying a purple patch and will be key to their hopes. Their bowling lineup, however, needs some attention, especially after the injury to Wanindu Hasaranga. Mahesh Theekshana, the other experienced spinner, hasn’t been able to lead from the front either – he went for 47 runs against Zimbabwe at an economy of 13.4.

England arguably have the stronger lineup. They’ve got the big names, as well as the depth, with almost everyone chipping in at some point in the tournament. They’ll also be confident heading into Pallekele, having won all three T20Is at this venue against Sri Lanka in a bilateral series just three weeks ago.
