How Long Will Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Play In IMAX 70MM As Tickets Sell Out Up To 7 Weeks

It is safe to say that Christopher Nolan's latest is going to have a massive run.

The Odyssey, Nolan's sweeping adaptation of the ancient epic poem attributed to Homer, opened this past weekend. The Odyssey's box office haul is easily shattering records, with a domestic opening weekend of $124.5 million and a total worldwide opening of $264 million. Moreover, as a new Christopher Nolan film, and the first ever to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, seeing it in IMAX 70mm is an essential part of the experience.

So how long exactly can fans expect to have the chance to attend such a screening of The Odyssey, especially when tickets are sold out weeks in advance? An IMAX spokesperson told Variety that their next official commitment is Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three (starring The Odyssey's Zendaya and Robert Pattinson), which does not release theatrically until December 18.

The spokesperson added that it is unlikely that The Odyssey will actually play uninterrupted on IMAX screens until December, though it will probably return occasionally for the rest of the year. But for all we know, The Odyssey — also starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland — could hold strong, become a truly unprecedented phenomenon, and keep consistently selling IMAX tickets until it is ousted by Dune.

As of now, tickets to The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm are sold out through August 19 in New York and Los Angeles, and through September 10 in London. There are IMAX screens in only 25 movie theaters in the U.S. and 41 theaters in the world. Upcoming IMAX releases include The End of Oak Street on August 14 and Zach Cregger's Resident Evil on September 18, though The Odyssey may still be able to retain some IMAX screens during these movies' runs.

Meanwhile, The Odyssey is still available to see in other formats, and movie chains are likely to keep it in theaters for a very long time due to popular demand. The movie has also lived up to the best of Nolan's filmography with its critical reception, securing a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% (at the time of writing), just trailing behind an audience score of 97%.

This and Nolan's track record mean that The Odyssey will likely be a major player at the 2027 Oscars, meaning there will be reason for it to make the rounds in movie theaters (in all formats) again early next year. The response to The Odyssey is remarkable, the likes of which we rarely see, but it has only just been released theatrically. There is plenty of time yet for it to surprise us.
