How John Dutton's presence lingers in new Yellowstone spin-off Marshals after Kevin Costner's role was killed off

Despite his shocking death in the final season of Yellowstone, rancher John Dutton remains a presence in the new spin-off about his family.

John, played by Kevin Costner, was killed off in a murder-for-hire plot in the fifth and final season of Yellowstone.

His memory remains alive in the very first episode of Marshals, the new show following his youngest son and former Navy SEAL, Kayce Dutton.

Being a member of the family, however, appeared to be something Kayce (Luke Grimes) kept close to his chest while serving in the military.

'All those years of door-kicking, you never once mentioned that you're some Montana Rockefeller,' Kayce's pal and former Navy SEAL teammate Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) told the Dutton, according to People.

'That was the best part about being a SEAL. Being a Dutton didn't matter,' Kayce replied.

John was also brought up during a conversation between Kayce and his son Tate, according to People.

'The only reason I'm gripping this place so tight is because it's the only thing I have to offer you, son,' Kayce told his son of their East Camp ranch.

'But what if I'm not sure I want it?' Tate asks.

'Your grandfather, he warned me about this. [He] said [that] one day, you'd test me. Force me to make a decision that not only affects your future, but my place in it,' Kayce replied.

'I want you to forge your own path — this camp is your home, it's not your destiny,' Kayce adds.

'I've lost my teammates, my parents, my brothers and even my wife, and I'm still standing. If I end up on the wrong side of you, that'd be the end of me, son.'

Costner departed Yellowstone after filming the first half of the fifth season amid a cloud of rumors he had feuded with creator Taylor Sheridan.

He evidently left the show over scheduling conflicts with his own four-part Western movie Horizon, which he directed, starred in and co-wrote.

Horizon, a decades-long passion project that Costner poured over $38 million of his own money into, debuted its first part last year to dismal box office results.

The Yellowstone spinoff Marshals: A Yellowstone Story debuted on March 1

Grimes became a household name on the smash hit series playing Kayce Dutton, the son of Kevin Costner's rancher patriarch, John Dutton

The spinoff, debuted on March 1, is centered around an elite team of US Marshals in Montana.

This tough group takes on gang members, the cartels and even Grizzly bears.

Gil Birmingham is returning as Broken Rock Reservation chief Thomas Rainwater.

He is seen in a trailer telling Kayce that all the Duttons are born killers, but that Kayce is different because he is a 'protector.'

The show also brings back Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.

American Horror Story star Ash Santos, Killers of the Flower Moon actor Tatanka Means and The Vampire Diaries alumna Arielle Kebbel have also been cast.

They are joining the program as series regulars, playing Kayce's fellow US Marshals, respectively called Andrea, Miles and Belle.

Several cast members from the original Yellowstone show are starring on Marshals

Meanwhile, Brett Cullen, who played Batman's father Thomas Wayne in Joker, will recur as the Montana head of the US Marshals, Harry Gifford.

Marshals: A Yellowstone Story will also feature Logan Marshall-Green, whose casting as Kayce's old military buddy Pete Calvin was announced last year.

The show's logline says Kayce will attempt to 'bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.'

Grimes starred throughout the hugely successful five-season run of Yellowstone as Kayce Dutton, one of the family of ranchers at the center of the story.
