Wunmi Mosaku Details "Scary" Yet "Beautiful" Sinners Journey
The DCOM is alive and well at the 2026 Academy Awards.
And it’s no surprise, as the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie The Luck of the Irish played a pivotal role in inspiring Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which is up for 16 Oscars at the March 15 ceremony hosted by Conan O’Brien. And as Ryan explained, it was ultimately the Disney flick that inspired his interest in Irish culture and how it resembled Black culture that he used as the basis for Sinners.
“That was our first introduction to some of the similarities in Irish folk music to, basically, our music,” Ryan—a native of Oakland, Calif.—shared with Deadline in November. “There was a small Irish community in The Bay, and we would talk about it.”
“That movie was kind of a touchpoint for us to jump off of, crazy enough,” the director said. “We’ve been fascinated with that culture in my family.”
Ryan, 39, added that he and his friends “used to watch that movie like crazy.”
The Luck of the Irish told the story of high school basketball star Kyle O’Reilly Johnson (Ryan Merriman) who is unaware of his Irish heritage and the magical curse upon his family. He must recover his lucky gold from the evil leprechaun Seamus McTiernen (Timothy Omundson) before he and his loved ones are all transformed into leprechauns themselves.

As for Sinners, the Irish nods in the film appear in the form of Jack O’Connell’s vampire Remmick who crashes the juke joint opened up by twin brothers Stack and Smoke, both played by Michael B. Jordan. But it wasn’t just The Luck of the Irish that inspired Remmick’s background.
“It was also a big shoutout to Bram Stoker, who was Irish, and kind of gave us the first context around the concept of a vampire in popular culture,” Ryan explained to Deadline. “So, it just made a lot of sense to explore the character that way.”
“He’s not Satan,” the Oscar nominee added, “but we saw him as a pre-colonial Irishman who had this massive backstory that we would kind of hint at and peel back like an onion.”

After the film adaptation of her novel was nominated for Best Picture, among other categories, Maggie described it as "astonishing and joyous news."
"’m so grateful to the Academy for these nominations, which recognise and celebrate the work of so many talented individuals who worked on Hamnet," she added. "When I was writing the novel, it never occured to me that such a turn of events would be possible: I’m having to pinch myself at regular intervals because it all seems like a dream."
