Julianne Hough Details Gut-Wrenching Story of How Her Dogs Died
Derek Hough puts family over everything.
Five years after his sister Julianne Hough’s dogs Lexi and Harley were killed in an unfortunate coyote attack, the Dancing with the Stars judge shared insight into how he supported her during the difficult time.
“I think just like in any family situation, you rally,” the 39-year-old told People Dec. 20. “You always come together.
“Families are always the ones that are there for you in difficult times,” he continued, “and I think it's in those moments you realize how wonderful family is.”
After all, the familial bond can be one of the most special things in life.
“I was talking to this doctor, and he said he's been at the bedside of thousands of patients basically on their deathbed,” he recalled. “And none of them ask for their awards, accolades or their money. They ask for their loved ones, and it's a good reminder. Family's so important."
Julianne lost her two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in 2019 amid an already difficult time, having just initiated her divorce from her then-husband Brooks Laich.
“I had asked for a separation,” she remembered during an August appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. “And then ten days later my dogs were killed by coyotes.”
“I woke up before my phone even rang and I knew,” she continued, “and I picked up the phone and my assistant at the time was just like screaming.”
But nonetheless, the Dancing with the Stars cohost tried to stay positive, relieved that her furry family members didn’t suffer in their last moments.
“That they went together, I'm so grateful they went together,” the 36-year-old shared. “Two, I'm grateful that usually how it happens is very quick and that we got their bodies. But at that time I was like, ‘Oh that was the unraveling of the absolute safety of like unconditional love.’”

“I had two dogs that were my kids,” she added. “I had them for 11 years and for eight years. And they were everything to me.”
But with the support of her loved ones, Julianne was surrounded not alone as she took the time to grieve. And she recently shared that the concept of soul fragmentation was also quite helpful to her finding peace after the loss of her pets.
"When something really tragic happens," she said on a September episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Show, "and a piece of your soul gets fragmented and it goes with whatever happened."
And because she felt that her soul had fragmented after her dogs died and that a piece of her was still with her pups, she "did a retrieval of bringing my soul back and also giving their piece of them back to them too."
"I realized, 'Oh, I'm holding them back,'" she admitted. "They need to be able to move forward and move on."
