Critics Choice Awards 2026: Charlie Hunnam's Girlfriend Had This Request About Monster Ed Gein Role
IRL Charlie Hunnam is not a monster. He just played one on TV.
But the lines got a bit too blurry for longtime girlfriend Morgana McNelis' taste while he was filming Netflix's Monster: The Ed Gein Story last year.
Portraying the titular 1950s era serial killer and grave robber, "I was slipping in and out of it all the time," Hunnam confessed on Live From E!: Critics Choice Awards of Gein's unsettlingly high-pitched voice. And while his commitment earned him Golden Globe and Critics Choice nods and a chance to walk away from the Sept. 14 Emmy Awards with a trophy for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television, it wasn't exactly a winning move for romance.
Confessed Hunnam, "She would say, 'Dude, you have to stop at the voice. At breakfast, it's a little too much.'"
Thankfully, the 46-year-old has other ways to, uh, rev her engine.
Two decades into their romance, noted the Sons of Anarchy alum, "I'm, like, so romantic."
Take the time he stayed up 'til 5 in the morning to clean their California ranch and stock up on groceries before heading off to the Toronto International Film Festival.
Or the way they kicked off 2026.
"We did it quiet," the British actor shared with ExtraTV at the Critics Choice Awards. "I always like to ring in the new year mainly on the 1st rather than on the 31st. So my wife and I went to bed early, got up, had a really beautiful hike and came in, set some intentions."
Though Hunnam has never confirmed they legally cemented their union, she definitely feels like his bride.
And though the Maison de Morgana founder's ring fingers have yet to be adorned with that sort of diamond, best believe the jewelry designer, 43, makes sure her man is bejeweled.
"She told me she was making me a diamond-encrusted ring," he told Elle back in 2012. "And I was like 'Uh-oh. This is not going to go well for me.' But I love it. It’s so discrete and beautiful."

As for his thoughts on marriage, he's not actually indifferent, as he told Andy Cohen in a 2020 SiriusXM interview, sharing that because McNelis is "very eager to get married," he would do it "because it's important to her, but I don't have any great romantic feelings towards it."
It's just after what he labeled a "terrible, painful, expensive" three-year marriage to actress Katharine Towne, that began with an impulsive Vegas wedding at 18, "the official government sanction of it doesn’t mean anything to me," he clarified weeks later in a video obtained by TooFab, "but the romance of it means an enormous amount."
Acknowledging he "really hurt my girlfriend’s feelings," he added, "I really regretted saying that. I actually didn’t mean it at all."
"But listen," he summed up, "you spend 12 hours a day for three days doing interviews straight, you’re going to say stupid s--t."
Because he rides hard for McNelis, taking to his Facebook fan page when viewers' thirst for his portrayal of SOA's Jax Teller led them to bully Hunnam's real life girlfriend.
"This is a girl I love very much and have spent the last 11 years of my life with and hope to spend the next 60 years," he explained in the 2016 missive. "She has been my loyal and supportive partner long before I had any success or money. Why would you attack her out of admiration for me? It makes no sense."
The two rarely make the whole place shimmer—while she accompanied him to March's Actor Awards and the Emmys last fall, she's "just tried to live a simple life," he has said—but McNelis understands his need to completely commit to his work.
"She got frustrated with me showing up and being a bit of a shell after doing a role," Hunnam explained to E! News last October of the parameters they've since set. "So, she said to me, probably about 10 years ago, 'Here's the rules of engagement: Go do your work. Be as selfish as you need to be, but then take some time, because when you get back, you better be ready to see me.' Which is completely fair and really lovely."
She was similarly understanding when an unreliable mail system in Colombia meant he ghosted her while filming The Lost City of Z in 2015. An "appropriately sized" emerald "didn't remedy all of the trouble I was in," he told Entertainment Weekly, "but it got me halfway there."
And after wrapping Monster in Chicago, he drove to Gein's Wisconsin gravesite shared Hunnam, "and spent some time with him, which was a healing way to say goodbye and put a full stop at the end of the thing."
In fact, McNelis was the one to nudge Hunnam—ready to ride again on the Sons of Anarchy spinoff Legends—toward the admittedly terrifying role.
"My partner had incredible conviction that this was an important thing to do," Hunnam told E!. "She's a great fan of the psychoanalysts, so she understands shadow work and the value of staring into the abyss and confronting the darkness much more than I do. So she was an amazing support to me, saying, 'You just got to go do this thing, you got to enter the cave and face the dragon.'"
