House Of The Dragon Season 4: Story, Release Window & Everything We Know

Expect more dragons, fire, blood, and tears in Game of Thrones' epic Targaryen-focused prequel, House of the Dragon, as the show is confirmed to return for season 4. House of the Dragon season 3 has been a completely different beast than the second, somewhat slower season, with the Dance of the Dragons reaching its peak thanks to incredibly cinematic battle scenes such as the water-bound Battle of the Gullet and other exciting narrative sequences, including Rhaenyra's reclamation of King's Landing.

The season 3 finale, set to air on Sunday, August 9 on HBO and HBO Max, is expected to chronicle the pivotal Battle of Tumbleton. This is one of the most vicious and cruel conflicts in the Dance of the Dragons, as depicted in George R.R. Martin's source material, Fire & Blood, a historical account of the Targaryen dynasty. Thankfully, this won't be the end of the show, though new episodes will take a while to premiere on HBO.

House Of The Dragon Season 4 Will Mark The End Of The Game Of Thrones Spinoff

HBO officially renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth season in November 2025, months before the show's season 3 return, confirming the network's continued commitment to George R.R. Martin's Westeros and its flagship fantasy franchise (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was renewed for season 2 at the same time). Though HBO has yet to confirm that season 4 will be the show's last, showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal has firmly maintained that this has always been the plan.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Condal reaffirmed his intention to stick to the show's four-season structure, telling the magazine, "I can't speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes, that is very much my plan." This is similar to what co-creator George R.R. Martin predicted the series would need to cover the Targaryen civil war in full. In October 2022, the author wrote on his blog that it would take "four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish." Condal and Martin have since had a falling out over the show's narrative direction.

While House of the Dragon season 1 had 10 episodes, seasons 2 and 3 have both had eight episodes each — season 2 was reportedly originally given a 10-episode order before it was reduced to eight. It's currently unclear how many episodes House of the Dragon season 4 will have.

House Of The Dragon Season 4 Is Expected To Release In 2028

House of the Dragon season 4 is expected to release in 2028, roughly two years after the premiere of season 3. While two years is a long wait for any show, if the final season does arrive that year, it's par for the course for House of the Dragon. While Game of Thrones managed to produce a season a year for most of its run — the only nearly two-year gap was between seasons 7 and 8 — House of the Dragon has stuck to its bi-annual schedule: season 1 premiered in August 2022 and season 2 released in July 2024.

During a press conference ahead of season 3's release, Condal explained that "prep and shooting" after the scripts were written can take up to a year, with post-production "dragon" effects taking at least seven or eight months of work. During that same interview, Condal revealed that writing on the new season started while post-production was still being done on season 3 (via Gold Derby):

"We're actively writing. We actually are starting to turn drafts over to HBO. This is early; we will keep iterating. I don't put the script down until they actually take it away from me in production. We're as far ahead as we've ever been at this point in crafting a new season."

House Of The Dragon Season 4 Cast & Returning Character Details

House of the Dragon is still a Game of Thrones show, so viewers should always expect the unexpected, especially when it comes to character deaths. The dastardly Ser Criston Cole, played by Fabien Frankel, will unfortunately miss out on the season 4 fun following his death in House of the Dragon season 3, episode 6, "Faceless Men." It was a fitting end for his character, lured into a trap by supporters of the Blacks after so openly betraying Rhaenyra, struck down by a surprise arrow to the eye.

Until House of the Dragon's season 3 finale has aired, it's impossible to say which characters and cast members will officially return for the final season. The Battle of Tumbleton will be an undeniably bloody conflict; major characters involved include Ormund Hightower (James Norton) and bastard dragon riders Hugh (Kieran Bew) and Ulf (Tom Bennett). King's Landing is no longer a haven for the Blacks either, as Rhaenyra's subjects feel increasingly disillusioned with their new ruler.

As it currently stands, the main cast members most likely to survive for House of the Dragon season 4 include Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon II Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, and Sonoya Mizuno as Misarya. Whether Matt Smith will return as Daemon Targaryen and Ewan Mitchell will reprise his role as Aemond Targaryen remains to be seen; the final episode could include their ultimate showdown, though of course, the outcome of that duel could also be altered to fit the writers' new vision or pushed back into the show's final season.

Other major characters currently still alive in season 3 include, but are not limited to, Phia Saban's Princess Helaena Targaryen, Kurt Egyiawan's Grand Maester Orwyle, Bethany Antonia's Lady Baela Targaryen, Abubakar Salim's Alyn of Hull, Phoebe Campbell's Lady Rhaena Targaryen — a little worse for wear after episode 7's four-way dragon confrontation — Clinton Liberty's Addam of Hull, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth's Prince Daeron Targaryen.

House Of The Dragon Season 4 Details Explained

It's hard to predict what will happen in House of the Dragon season 4 without knowing what happens in the upcoming season finale. Some events from Fire & Blood may be included in the episode, while others may be saved for the show's last outing. Thematically, House of the Dragon will mostly explore the fallout of Rhaenyra's mishandled rule, as the people of King's Landing and her own loyal servants turn against her. However, House of the Dragon has already laid the groundwork for two of the book's most harrowing stories in season 4; neither is likely to be adapted in this week's episode.

In season 3, episode 7, Helaena has a vision alluding to the Storming of the Dragonpit. Living in fear of the Greens' retaliation and fed up with Rhaenyra's poor leadership, a mob storms the Dragonpit, killing all the Dragonkeepers before attacking the dragons trapped and chained up inside. This event causes the deaths of four more Targaryen dragons, including Helaena's own beast, Dreamfyre. It's the ultimate culmination of the fear and resentment that has been festering in King's Landing since Rhaenyra reclaimed the Iron Throne.

Additionally, Sunfyre's surprise "resurrection" in episode 7 sets up season 4's and the entire show's most important death. As Aegon believed when he first came across Sunfyre's body earlier in season 3, the fearsome, now scarred dragon rose once more to protect its rider, having healed (enough) from its previous battle against Aemond's massive dragon, Vhagar. In Fire & Blood, Sunfyre and Aegon are directly involved in Rhaenyra's death after she flees King's Landing. Clearly, there's a lot of emotional turmoil (and bloody gore) still to come in House of the Dragon season 4, no matter what happens in the season 3 finale.
