Cinema Guild has acquired North American distribution rights to Hong Sangsoo‘s “Nowhere to Lay My Eyes.”

The film will have its world premiere at the 79th Locarno Film Festival in August.

“Nowhere to Lay My Eyes” follows Sanghee (Kim Minhee), who visits her mother on Jeju Island with her brother after 10 years apart. Her stepfather, a documentary filmmaker, is working on a project about a “grass tomb,” while her mother’s restaurant has turned into a lucrative business. Sanghee also meets her stepfather’s daughter, who has recently taken up painting. Sanghee, who has a day job importing snacks and shoots short films in her spare time, spends two days with the family as old secrets, unsolicited advice and hollow flattery come to the surface.

The film marks Hong’s 35th feature and tracks Sanghee through a series of awkward encounters and small revelations. The film brings Hong back together with Kim Minhee, Kwon Haehyo, Shin Seokho and Park Miso, and marks the first appearance of actor Choi Myeonggil in one of the director’s films.

Cinema Guild president Peter Kelly said: “We can never run out things to say about director Hong because he continues to surprise with each new release. A wonderful film to behold with a captivating performance by Kim Minhee.”

The acquisition was negotiated by Kelly on behalf of Cinema Guild and Youngjoo Suh of Finecut.

Cinema Guild’s upcoming slate includes restorations of Otar Iosseliani’s films and Hong’s “The Day She Returns.” Recent releases from the distributor include Kamal Aljafari’s “With Hasan in Gaza,” Hong’s “What Does That Nature Say to You” and Aleksandre Koberidze’s “Dry Leaf.”
