James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

Though Harry Potter is obviously an extremely popular IP by any standards, few could have predicted just how successful Hogwarts Legacy was going to be for this current generation of consoles. It remains comfortably one of the most commercially profitable releases in recent years, as well as one of the most played single-player titles on the PlayStation 5 in terms of raw hours.

That said, in many ways, it's quite a limited game with not much to do beyond the single-player story and the few open-world elements that the developer included. They also confirmed that no DLC was on the way anytime soon, which could easily have left witches and wizards everywhere with their heads in their hands.

Happily, that has turned out to not be the case with confirmation that the sequel is in development, and fans can be any happier about it.

Over on Reddit, one user shared a post confirming the news that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is, in fact, on the way, and hundreds of fans were quick to weigh in with their responses about what they wanted to see from the next game in the burgeoning series. There was a particular focus on the potential of multiplayer, given the rumors surrounding the game potentially being live service.

"I think they need to make the game multiplayer, because imagine experiencing Hogwarts with your friends. Obviously, have a story mode but have a multiplayer mode where you and your friends can unlock more items and I just think it would be pretty cool to play with your friends," one comment read.

While another added, "Happy it's being made. They need to massively improve the ability to interact with the world around you before anything. Please let me lift objects with my wand around Hogwarts or anything more than just spinning a globe and petting a cat."

A third weighed in with their own personal gripe, saying, "They need to make collecting stuff way easier. Hogwarts is way too big to be running around spending hours trying to figure out how to get to a chest just behind a wall but having to backtrack so far away to find some dumb secret entrance for another bs gear collectible."

Another added a potential avenue for the story, saying, "After playing HL, I've always thought the MC of HL2 should be a (young) teacher with an extra assignment with the Ministry. It won't happen, but that would give a reason to go into the world for a quest and a connection with the school."

Interestingly, it already seems as though the next Hogwarts Legacy is going to be a very different proposition from the first. We know it's going to follow the narrative of the main Harry Potter series (to coincide with the HBO show), while it will also include the aforementioned multiplayer and live service elements. All of that sounds like a major gamble, though, for a game that did so well, it's difficult to see why they're changing the formula too much.
