Hitch Director Reveals Will Smith Feud 20 Years Later

Grammys 2025: Will Smith Makes First Major Award Show Appearance Since Oscars Slap

Will Smith’s foray into romantic comedies didn’t quite go off without a hitch.

Two decades after the actor starred opposite Eva Mendes in the 2005 hit Hitch, the film’s director Andy Tennant revealed he didn’t have the smoothest experience working with his onscreen lead.

“We had our difficulties,” the filmmaker said in an interview with Business Insider published Feb. 11. “The movie I wanted to make and the movie Will wanted to make, neither one of those movies is as good as the movie we made together. It was a battle.”

Andy went on to accuse the Oscar winner of trying to “back out” of the project just three days before the start of filming so he could “work on it some more.” However, the director commended Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith for allegedly stepping in behind the scenes.

“Jada was a big help,” he continued. “She kind of seconded some of my instincts. There was a time during prep when I was pushing back on a lot of crazy s--t that was happening.”

Despite the alleged friction, Andy said he was willing to move forward with a second Hitch movie and even “submitted a proposal for a sequel.” And while his version of the project never got off the ground, he said he recently learned that Will was moving forward with a follow-up of his own.

“I just found out about it three months ago,” he shared. “I had a really good idea for a sequel, and I was talking to an executive at Sony, and he said Will’s production company is developing a sequel.”

Andy added, “Hey, that’s Hollywood.”

E! News has reached out to Will and Jada’s reps for comment but has not heard back.

Meanwhile, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum is working on a follow-up to his 2007 thriller I Am Legend alongside Michael B. Jordan, who previously shared he was “really looking forward to” working with Will.

“We're still working on the script and getting that up to par,” Michael told People in June. "It doesn't have a release date or anything like that. I'm not sure exactly where we're going to be filming that one, but I'm really excited to get in front of the camera with him.”
