The BBC has announced that the original version of supernatural sitcom Ghosts will return for another unexpected adventure on the big screen.

Ghosts UK, which premiered in 2019, follows young couple Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike Cooper (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) as they inherit a rickety old manor estate occupied by a wide variety of historical and neurotic ghosts. Desperate to own their own home, Alison and Mike make the best of an unusual situation, with grand plans to turn the house into a hotel.

The series, which ran for five seasons on BBC One, has inspired six international remakes (so far), including versions set in Greece, France, Australia, and Germany, as well as CBS's currently airing Ghosts US starring Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar. The concept has also recently been licensed in Czechia. Now, however, the original Ghosts will make a splashy return in theaters with Ghosts: The Possession of Button House.

In the BBC's press release, it was confirmed that Ghosts' team of writers, creators, and stars has reunited to write the feature film's script, and they will also all reprise their roles as Button House's not-so-fearsome spirits.

Mathew Baynton returns as Thomas Thorne, Simon Farnaby will return as Julian Fawcett MP, Martha Howe-Douglas will reprise her role as Lady Fanny Button, Sex Education's Jim Howick returns as Pat Butcher, Laurence Rickard is back as caveman Robin, and Ben Willbond will return as The Captain.

Joining them are Ritchie, Smith-Bynoe, and BAFTA nominee Lolly Adefope, who will return as 18th-century noblewoman Katherine "Kitty" Higham. Ghosts and fellow British sitcom Motherland director Simon Hynd will direct the movie, which is slated to start production in March.

In a statement to the BBC, the creators behind Ghosts said of the upcoming project:

"We thought we had said goodbye to Button House at the end of the final series. We never planned to come back. But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn’t resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure. We can’t wait to be together and to welcome some brilliant new faces, to tell this soul-stirring tale of life and death."

While Ghosts UK produced a mere 30 episodes compared to Ghosts US's 86 episodes (and counting, as the show has been renewed for a sixth season), this cinematic return — rather than a streaming reunion — is undeniable proof of the original run's continued popularity. It was the most-watched sitcom in the UK in 2023 and boasts impressively balanced Rotten Tomatoes critics' and audience scores of 96% and 91%, respectively.

Lionsgate will distribute Ghosts: The Possession of Button House in the UK, while BBC Studios will handle distribution worldwide.

Ghosts UK seasons 1–5 are available to stream in the US via Paramount+.
