SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from the Season 1 finale of ABC‘s High Potential.
Tuesday night’s High Potential finale left audiences with more questions than answers as Morgan and the LAPD begin to zero in on what happened to her ex, Roman Sinquerra.
Here’s a recap of the episode:
Things kick off when the LAPD receives a tip while discussing their upcoming police gala, which Soto has requested the entire Major Crimes unit is in attendance for. The tip is merely a photo of a man being held hostage with a note that says: “Spencer Wallace wouldn’t play with me, will you?”
The man in the photo, presumably Spencer Wallace, is holding a sign that reads: “Two hours to make your move.”
They start by visiting Spencer’s apartment, where they find a puzzle waiting on his doorstep. Inside is a note that reads “let’s play.” Back at the station, Morgan solves the puzzle to discover it is an elevation map of the Hollywood Hills area, and one piece is missing — another clue.
She and Karadec head for the region covered in that missing piece and, sure enough, they find another game. This time, they’ll need to play “Loco Ocho” to figure out which of the two paths in front of them to take. They take the second path to find two hopscotch patterns sketched on the ground, which Morgan uses to decipher some coordinates, looking through the viewfinder on the top of the hill to determine that they need to head for a storage facility in the distance, where they eventually find Spencer.
This is just the beginning, though. Amid this case, Morgan gets a visit from Gio, the man who was the last one to see Roman alive. He’s sitting at a diner eating soup when Morgan walks in to pick up dinner for her family. He tells her that he has found a connection to Roman’s disappearance in the form of a woman named Lila Flynn.
Morgan doesn’t have much time to mull that over though, because the next day they’ve got a new lead on the kidnapper case. Someone has left a stroller full of creepy baby dolls at the venue where they’ll be hosting the police gala, and the dolls are holding Scrabble blocks that spell, “the fun has just begun.”
This is when Oz decides to let everyone know that he actually recognized Spencer from a grief group he attends, and he speculates that the kidnapper could be part of this group. So, to the grief group they go.
In the course of interviewing the rest of the group, they come to the consensus that a man named David is a likely suspect. The director of the group also mentions that another member, a woman named Sierra, was missing from that session, which was unusual for her. Another victim?
Sierra’s apartment is in a state of chaos when they arrive, confirming she’s David’s latest victim. Morgan manages to figure out that there’s a hidden message on her wall that says “you can’t tell in the dark.” Turns out, Sierra is an ASL interpreter, and this clue leads them to realize those creepy babies are sending a message with their hands. They decipher the clue to locate an old art gallery, where they find Sierra.
Through channels of his own, Karadec finds out that Lila Flynn was an undercover field agent for the FBI and she was murdered 15 years ago, and one of the last cases she was working on was Roman’s disappearance. FBI agent hands Karadec a file and tells him to burn it after he reads it.
It’s a pretty major breakthrough in that season-long mystery, but it’ll have to wait, because Oz is the latest grief group victim and is attacked in a parking garage. Once Forrester finds his car, she also sees an hourglass and a note that says “Marco!” sitting on the driver’s seat.
The team meets back at the station to review all the clues and try to understand what is going on. Forrester realizes the fonts on the notes from David are different, and Morgan saves the day yet again by uncovering that all the fonts are pointing her to a home in Encino, where Oz is currently chained to the bottom of the pool. They save him just in time, but still no sight of David.
Once Oz is safe and sound, Karadec pays Gio a visit, and even though Gio is resistant, Karadec demands to know why he wants to meet Morgan alone. He says that he has something to give Morgan, but he won’t give up the reasons he’s helping Morgan with her search for Roman, despite the target it’s putting on him.
Back at the station, they uncover that the owner of the house where Oz was is owned by a wealthy family who have a son named David Peck. They think that’s their guy, and Soto is ready to plaster his face all over the news.
But wait — at the same time, Morgan is loading groceries into her car with her kids when an item goes rolling away and a man picks it up and returns it to the bag it fell out of before joking with Morgan and walking away. It isn’t until she gets home that she realizes that wasn’t a coincidental interaction.
Unloading the groceries, she discovers a card game has been placed in her grocery bag. The box says “You’re the one, Morgan. We shall play again. Me and you.”
Looks like David Peck found her — or not? At the station, Forrester discovers that David Peck has been in a rehab facility for the last four months. So who is this guy?
As Morgan is reeling from her own discovery, she gets a call from Karadec, who is leaving Gio’s. He tells her he knows where Roman is, because he’s alive.
End scene!
Sadly, viewers will be left on this cliffhanger for quite a while, since High Potential is expected to return in the fall. The good news is that it was already renewed for Season 2, so answers are on the horizon.
