High Potential's 2027 Return Also Comes With A Significant Season 3 Change

While High Potential won’t be back until 2027, the show’s return comes armed with an exciting change for the series. Since the show began, High Potential suffered from no shortage of impressive names working on the series. The show was created by Drew Goddard, who cut his teeth on the ‘90s cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer before moving on to Lost and later penning the cult classic Cabin in the Woods.

Meanwhile, series writer Rob Thomas is no stranger to quirky, subversive spins on the detective drama genre, having created Veronica Mars before working on iZombie. High Potential’s high-concept premise, of a single mom with an abnormally high IQ helping out the LAPD on cases thanks to her Sherlock Holmes-level powers of deduction, was always one that had in-built potential. However, this duo were instrumental in bringing the show’s potential, as it were, to life.

Original show runner Todd Harthan also deserves some credit for this, as he ran the series while High Potential established its main characters and storytelling style throughout seasons 1 and 2. In that time, High Potential not only got viewers invested in the story of Kaitlin Olson’s Morgan, but also in her colleagues like Judy Reyes’ Selena and Deniz Akdeniz’s Oz. However, Harthan left the show ahead of season 3’s 2027 arrival, despite its continued ratings success.

Why High Potential's Original Showrunner Left The Show

Luckily, Harthan’s exit after season 2 was not due to any creative disagreements behind the scenes. Instead, the showrunner opted to move on to working on Disney+’s upcoming live-action Eragon TV series. The latest in a string of attempts to rival HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, this Christopher Paolini adaptation arrives after the critical success of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 earlier in 2026.

Harthan and Paolini are co-creating the series, with Marc Webb and Todd Helbing also reportedly attached, according to Deadline. Eragon was previously adapted as a 2006 movie that, although successful at the box office, didn’t impress critics upon release. However, since HBO turned His Dark Materials into a prestige hit and Disney+ has already rebooted the Percy Jackson franchise despite both YA fantasy franchises having existing live-action movie adaptations from the late 2000s, this is seemingly not a concern for the creators.

High Potential Season 3 Will Feature Several Big Changes

For anyone concerned that this change will utterly ruin the fun, Agatha Christie-inspired murder mystery antics of High Potential, there is no need to stress. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman will be serving as co-showrunners starting with season 3, and the pair have perfect pedigree qualifying them for the role. The sisters previously worked on Knives Out creator Rian Johnson’s whodunit murder mystery show Poker Face, which was a critical darling but only lasted two seasons on Peacock.

Between its mid-season debut and new showrunners, it seems like a lot is changing in High Potential season 3. However, viewers should take solace in the fact that Nora and Lilla Zuckerman could not be better suited to taking over the series, and their upcoming projects prove that they are not just a good fit for the warmer and fuzzier side of the murder mystery genre.

High Potential has, on occasion, featured seriously tense and unnerving plots that felt less like something from Murder She Wrote and more indebted to Law & Order or CSI. Poker Face, thanks to its creative debt to the classic whodunit Columbo, was more broadly comedic than High Potential, but Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are also set to write Scream 8 after the box office success of Scream 7 earlier in 2026. Thus, High Potential’s new showrunners clearly aren’t afraid of a gruesome murder mystery, as well as funnier and more playful one.
