Happy birthday, Pokémon! Now officially at the age when the joints start to creak and you can really feel those hangovers kick in. Today marks 30 years since the perennially popular creature catching series made its Japanese Game Boy debut in the form of Pocket Monsters Red and Green, and developer Game Freak is celebrating the occasion with a special anniversary Pokémon Presents showcase. Wondering what’s been announced? We’ll keep track of all the big news - could that include a peek at the next mainline Pokémon game? - as things unfold. Ready yourself for continuing updates below!
There's a Game Boy-like music player for Pokémon music cartridges
Want a cute (if probably quite impractical) way to listen to music from Pokémon Red and Blue? Well, then you might be intrigued by the Game Boy Jukebox - a small device, designed to resemble a mini Game Boy, that you slot Pokémon game cartridges into. Except they don't play games, only music. These music players are available via the Pokémon Center store in the UK, Canada, and US from today, and there are 45 songs - and therefore 45 cartridges - to collect. No pricing details were mentioned.
Gale of the Darkness is coming to Nintendo Online.
GameCube game Gale of the Darkness is being added to Nintendo Switch Online as part of the Nintendo Classics range. It's coming this March 2026, which isn't far away!
Home support confirmed for Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
Those slightly controversial standalone Swtichs release of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are now here, with The Pokémon Company giving them another airing during its anniversary showcase. The big news, though, is that Home support is now confirmed, with the ability to transfer your FireRed and LeafGreen critters to the subscription storage service coming "in the future".
Pokémon Champions narrows down its release window
The previously announced Pokémon Champions, which lets players battle each other in an arena using new or previous Pokémon Partners (you'll need to use Pokémon Home in order to access the latter), finally has narrowed down its 2026 release window a little further: it's coming to Switch sometime this April, with Android and iOS versions to follow.
Mega Garchomp Z comes to Pokémon Z-A: Mega Dimension
If you're still tootling away in Pokémon Z-A, you might be interested to hear that its Mega Dimension DLC is getting a bit of an update. Starting today, 27th February, you can claim a Mystery Gift that'll let you detect a special hyperspace distortion - in-game, obviously. That, in turn, will lead you to Mega Garchomp Z. And if you manage to defeat it, you'll get a Garchompite Z stone that your own Garchomp can hold to Mega Evolve into Mega Garchomp Z.
Another look at Pokémon Pokopia
It’s not too far away at this point, but it looks like Pokopia still has a few surprises - including Rotom’s role as a handy music player? And if you’re peckish you’ll be able to chat with Chef Dente - a Greedent - to learn new food recipes. We also got a peek at four-player multiplayer mode, for those wanting to visit their pals islands. Not much that’s super new or super exciting, then, but it continues to looks cool!
Pokémon Wind and Waves gets the reveal treatment, but...
And here it is, Gen 10! Pokémon Winds and Waves got their big debut, including a look at its seemingly Polynesia-inspired world - all blue skies, tropical jungles, and rolling waves - alongside its three new starters: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua. The big news, though, is that we won’t be getting the games this year - Pokémon Wind and Waves are confirmed for release in 2027.
