Henry Cavill and the original 1984 Voltron Custom image by TC Phillips

The Voltron movie starring Henry Cavill has officially begun filming, with the start of production celebrated by a new behind-the-scenes photo. Based on the classic animated series that features a team of space pilots whose robots join together to create the show’s titular super robot, plans for a live-action adaptation of the property have been in place as far back as 2005. However, after languishing in development and passing through multiple hands, the long-anticipated project found fresh life when a new attempt was announced in 2022 and sparked a bidding war from rival studios, ultimately landing at Amazon MGM Studios.

Taking to Instagram, Voltron producer Bob Koplar recently celebrated the commencement of filming by sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s production logo. Featured on the side of a camera, the movie’s logo is reminiscent of the original Voltron logo first created for the original 1984 animated series and sees the return of the sword motif that was conspicuously absent from the logo for Netlfix’s 2016 animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender. At this stage, little is known about the plot details for the new live-action Voltron movie, and even a number of questions surround the film’s casting. While it is known that Cavill will be joined by Emmy and Oscar nominee Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us), singer-songwriter Rita Ora (Fifty Shades of Grey), and John Kim (Cruel Intentions), their exact roles have not been confirmed, despite the assumption they will all form part of Team Voltron.

Henry Cavill’s Upcoming Space Movie Will Make Up For This Short-Lived Sci-Fi Franchise That Deserved Much Better

Henry Cavill was recently cast in a major sci-fi film that could finally make up for the disappointing franchise-to-be that was Pacific Rim.

However, given the decidedly retro approach to the movie’s new production logo, it is possible that the film will also seek to harken back to some of the Voltron franchise’s earliest trademarks. Potentially swapping out the more modern iteration of Team Voltron for the original Lion Force consisting of Keith, Lance, Pidge, Sven, Hunk, and Princess Allura, Amazon and MGM Studio’s new Voltron movie could very well end up becoming a treat for some of the franchise’s longest-running fans.

Amazon MGM May Be Intentionally Leveraging Nostalgic Appeal

First adapted from the 1981 Japanese anime Beast King GoLion, the Voltron franchise has been a beloved part of the pop culture landscape for over four decades. While plans to bring the property to life via a live-action movie first coalesced at the same time as Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, the property’s protracted journey has been a long time coming.

With filming now officially underway, hopefully more details will begin to emerge about the direction of the hotly anticipated project. At this stage, the clues are few and far between, and even the exact makeup of Team Volton remains shrouded in mystery. However, having the new Voltron movie undertake a direct appeal to nostalgia would likely be the best way to solidify the support of the franchise’s existing fanbase.
