‘Heated Rivalry’ Season 2 Is Officially Moving Away From the Show’s Winning Formula

Filming for Heated Rivalry Season 2 is officially underway. Based on Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series, the new season is set to adapt The Long Game, the sequel to Heated Rivalry. Picking up roughly three years after Season 1, Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) have gone from a secret situationship to a committed relationship, though they’re still keeping their romance under wraps. Heated Rivalry may be Shane and Ilya’s story, but Season 2 is poised to expand the world beyond its original couple. Alongside continuing their romance, the new season is expected to lay the groundwork for another relationship from Reid’s Game Changers books.

What Is ‘Heated Rivalry’ Season 2 About?

In the Heated Rivalry Season 1 finale, Shane and Ilya’s trip to the cottage brings Shane to an unexpected turning point: he finally tells his parents the truth about their relationship, and they’re happy for him. If Season 2 stays true to the source material, it may pick up from the book's epilogue, where Shane and Ilya announce their joint charity, the Irina Foundation, to the press. Not only is the charity a tribute to Ilya’s mother, who died by suicide, but it also gives Shane and Ilya the perfect excuse to be seen together in public despite playing for rival teams.

In The Long Game, Shane and Ilya are entering their eleventh NHL season while continuing their work with the foundation. They’re grateful for the opportunity to spend more time together without raising suspicions, but they’re also beginning to question whether they really want to keep their relationship a secret for another decade. As much as Shane loves Ilya, the thought of coming out fills him with anxiety. Meanwhile, the usually calm and collected Ilya desperately wants Shane to love him openly, but he knows better than to pressure Shane into doing something he isn’t ready for.

'Heated Rivalry' Season 2 Will Introduce a Couple From Book 5

Season 2 of Heated Rivalry is keeping things interesting by not only adapting The Long Game, but also introducing the central couple from Role Model — the fifth novel in Reid's Game Changers series — in the same season. Another major development in the Heated Rivalry universe involves Ilya’s transfer from the Boston Raiders to the Ottawa Centaurs, bringing him closer to Shane. Unlike his former team, the Centaurs aren’t exactly NHL championship material, but Ilya’s move to the Canadian team also gives the TV adaptation a natural way to introduce Troy Barrett (Charlie Gillespie) and Harris Drover (Justice Smith).

More of Troy and Harris’ budding romance is explored in Role Model, but The Long Game provides a closer look at who they are as individuals and their connections to Ilya. Troy is described as a “talented forward” who was traded to Ottawa for draft picks after getting into a fight with a former teammate and friend facing sexual assault accusations. Although Troy is initially cold toward Ilya, the team captain helps him adjust to the Centaurs. Meanwhile, Harris is the bubbly social media manager for the Ottawa Centaurs.

'Heated Rivalry' Creator Jacob Tierney Has Big Plans for Season 2 and Beyond

Despite the overlap with Role Model, series creator Jacob Tierney has emphasized that “Heated Rivalry, as a show, will always be focused around Shane and Ilya.” With more people catching up on Reid’s Game Changers series, it’s not surprising that fans may already know what happens in Season 2, but Tierney isn’t trying to hide what comes next. Instead of relying on major twists or surprises, he's revealed that the show's return will focus on feelings, chemistry, sensuality, and execution.

Gillespie and Smith’s Season 2 casting, however, has been met with some backlash from members of the show's passionate fanbase. Reid, who faced similar reactions when Williams and Storrie were cast as Shane and Ilya, addressed the criticism on social media, recalling how fans once claimed their casting was “wrong and bad.” Smith also responded to the support he has received, saying he feels moved by fans who have welcomed him and already care deeply about Harris. He promised to treat the character with care and expressed excitement about joining the series. Like Williams and Storrie, Gillespie and Smith may simply need time to win fans over.
