HBO may not rival Netflix or Prime Video in terms of overall subscriber numbers, but where the streamer is unrivaled is its consistency in putting out prestige shows across multiple genres. HBO is also home to one of the most popular fantasy franchises in the world, Game of Thrones, which has released two new seasons of different spin-off shows this year. HBO found success early in the year with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and that success continued with House of the Dragon Season 3, and both shows are coming back in the next two years with new seasons. HBO has also developed another steady hit with The Pitt, the critically acclaimed medical drama starring Noah Wyle, who spent years recurring on ER — The Pitt is set to return early next year for its third season.

HBO has never lacked in prestige dramas, where it’s put out some of the best shows in the genre, like Succession or Industry, but the streamer has been searching for a true-grit, highly watchable legal thriller. The success of other shows like The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix and Goliath on Prime Video has made the need for a solid courtroom drama/legal thriller greater than ever, and HBO has finally found its answer to the problem. We’re talking, of course, about War, the gripping new legal drama led by stars like Dominic Cooper, Pip Torrens, and Sienna Miller. HBO unleashed the first episode of War almost exactly two weeks ago on October 1, and while the show has still yet to overthrow Lanterns from the top spot, it’s sitting comfortably at #2 and just waiting to claim streaming glory.

What Is HBO’s ‘War’ About?

War was written and created for TV by George Kay, who is best known for his work writing the Omar Sy-led crime thriller on Netflix, Lupin. Kay also wrote one of the most underrated shows on Apple TV, Hijack, which stars Idris Elba. The official synopsis for the series, which holds solid scores of 87% from critics and 70% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes through its first few episodes, reads as follows: “Two rival London law firms take on the case of the century; in a world of love, scandal, betrayal and ambition, winning is everything.”

Check out the first two episodes of War on HBO Max and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the show as new episodes are released every Thursday.
