HBO's upcoming adaptation of Harry Potter has been largely kept under wraps, with little known about how the series will unfold or when it will be released. However, a senior executive at Warner Bros. Discovery has recently shared some exciting news.
The series is based on J.K. Rowling's fantasy books, which were also adapted into the global phenomenon that was the Warner Bros. movie series from 2001 to 2011. It follows the life of an orphaned boy named Harry Potter who discovers on his 11th birthday that he's a wizard and is enrolled at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he meets his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and uncovers the shocking truth that his parents died at the hands of the dark wizard Lord Voldemort.
In an interview with Variety, WBD streaming boss JB Perrette spoke of the exciting developments happening for HBO's highly-anticipated adaptation of Harry Potter and has teased major things for fans waiting on the edges of their seats. HBO has yet to unveil a specific release date for the series, but the cast has been announced, and filming has already begun for the series.
"The scope of the production, the detail, meticulousness of what they’re going through and what they’ve built takes theatrical to just a whole different level. And so, when you think of the love of that franchise and what you can do in a series — can go deeper, and tell more of the story, can tell more of the pieces that you didn’t get to capture in a two-hour movie – Casey [Bloys, HBO Max boss] doesn’t like it when I say this, but I’m gonna say it anyway. I really think this is the streaming event of the decade."
Image via HBOThe movies were extremely successful and are often referenced as one of the highest-grossing film franchises ever, cementing the Wizarding World into pop culture. The franchise grossed over $9.5 billion worldwide, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 grossing well over $1.3 billion. The universe continues to be a major tourist attraction and still earns revenue despite having concluded 15 years ago.
The new cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Warwick Davis as Professor Filius Flitwick, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
HBO's Chairman and CEO Bloys confirmed that the Harry Potter series will be released in 2027, but a specific date has yet to be announced.
