Arielle Port started as a TV producer, developing content for Netflix (Firefly Lane, Brazen) and Hallmark (The Santa Stakeout, A Christmas Treasure) before transitioning into entertainment journalism. Her love of story went from interest to lifelong passion while at The University of Pennsylvania, where she fell in with a student-run web series, Classless TV, and it was a gateway drug. Arielle Port has been a Writer for Screen Rant since August 2024. She lives in Los Angeles with her boyfriend and more importantly, her cat, Boseman.

Few comedies have matched the consistency, acclaim, and cultural footprint of Hacks. Across its run, Hacks has become HBO’s most reliable awards performer, with Jean Smart delivering one of television’s most decorated comedy performances as Deborah Vance. Remarkably, Smart has yet to lose the Emmy for her role in Hacks.

Hannah Einbinder finally secured a long-overdue Supporting Actress win last season after multiple nominations for her role as Ava Daniels. Beyond acting, Hacks regularly receives award recognition, landing nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series as well as Writing and Directing, a sign of how widely respected it is within the industry.

The show is deeply rooted in showbiz, exploring stand-up comedy, writers’ rooms, and the reinvention of a legacy performer, yet it remains accessible because it frames everything through the generational clash between Deborah and Ava.

While not all shows have the luxury of ending on their own terms, the co-creators of Hacks, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, have always had a clear five-season vision. Season 4 of Hacks saw Deborah reach new professional highs and lows, leaving Hacks season 5 wide open for its closing chapter in TV’s most toxic love story at the perfect time.

Ending Hacks With Season 5 Is The Right Move

Concluding Hacks with season 5 makes sense because the show has always been structured around distinct, forward-moving chapters. Each season has had its own flavor and focus, from rebuilding Deborah’s act in Vegas, to the road tour, to campaigning for late night, and finally to actually doing late night.

That evolution makes Hacks feel more plot-driven than a traditional hangout comedy. While the characters are the heart of the series, the story is constantly moving toward the next professional and emotional milestone, which naturally creates a finite arc. The trio of creators has long said they envisioned a defined endpoint, and the show benefits from that clarity.

Rather than stretching the premise indefinitely, Hacks has continued to reinvent itself each season while building toward a larger conclusion. Last season in particular felt like a culmination, with Deborah finally achieving her long-held late-night dream, only to walk away instead of sacrificing Ava.

That decision reshaped their relationship and opened the door for one last reinvention after the dramatic events of the Hacks season 4 finale. Season 5 now has the opportunity to function as a final button in Deborah and Ava’s story. Ending there preserves the show’s momentum and prevents it from losing focus.

And even if the main story concludes, the world of Hacks is rich enough to continue elsewhere. It feels like season 4 was a soft pitch for a Schaefer-LuSaque (and Randi) spinoff.

Hacks Is A Toxic Love Story At Heart

At its core, Hacks plays less like traditional friendship comedies and more like a toxic, non-romantic love story. A toxic love story and a messy platonic friendship can look similar on the surface, but they’re built on different emotional engines.

Deborah depends on Ava creatively to stay relevant, while Ava relies on Deborah professionally and emotionally for mentorship and validation. They hurt each other repeatedly, through betrayals, firings, and public humiliation, yet they always find their way back.

The show even structures their conflicts like romantic breakups and reconciliations, complete with longing, jealousy, and forgiveness arcs. There’s also a built-in imbalance of power, with boss-and-employee dynamics layered over legend-and-newcomer status, making their attachment feel unhealthy but impossible to sever.

Even Jean Smart has leaned into this framing in interviews, describing Deborah and Ava’s relationship as something like a marriage where they “can’t live with each other, can’t live without each other.” That push-pull intensity is what gives Hacks its emotional backbone and distinguishes it from a standard messy friendship or workplace sitcom.

Hacks season 5 debuts Thursday, April 9th, on HBO Max.
