Along with Zendaya, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, and Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway has emerged as one of the most successful stars of 2026. It's no wonder that several of their movies have overlapped. All of them, for instance, appeared in Christopher Nolan's record-breaking blockbuster The Odyssey, which has grossed nearly $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office. Hathaway also headlined the legacy sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2, which generated around $700 million globally. More recently, she starred in the sci-fi film The End of Oak Street and the psychological thriller Verity, which grossed around $120 million and $160 million worldwide, respectively. However, she began the year on a false note, having delivered a movie that grossed a little more than one-tenth of its budget. The movie in question recently debuted on HBO Max, where it appears to finally have found an audience.

Hathaway's only box-office bomb of 2026 also happens to be the biggest disappointment of A24's year. The outfit has had a particularly strong run in 2026, with movies such as The Drama and Primetime having exceeded expectations, and Backrooms having emerged as its biggest hit ever, with a $400 million global haul. More recently, A24 shocked the industry by releasing You Can See Everything, a three-hour documentary that has grossed around $50 million in just 10 days. Back in April, however, A24 unveiled the buzzy drama starring Hathaway, which grossed just $3 million against a reported budget of $20 million.

Anne Hathaway Was Coming Off a Decade-Long Lull

We're talking about director David Lowery's psychological drama Mother Mary, also starring Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer. The movie appeared to continue Hathaway's poor box-office run at the time, which lasted around a decade and seemed to peak in recent years with movies such as Eileen, Armageddon Time, She Came to Me, and Mothers' Instinct. Mother Mary received mixed reviews, and is now sitting at a 59% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "Anne Hathaway acquits herself well as a believable pop star in Mother Mary, a modish psychodrama that can be frustratingly obtuse but has style to spare." According to FlixPatrol, it emerged as the number-one movie worldwide on HBO Max this week, giving it a second life. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
